When I was younger watching it used to give me hope and made me feel like I'd have close friends eventually. Now that I'm an adult and it hasn't really happened, the happy endings and positivity just disappoint me about my life. I still don't have anyone to watch it with either because my partner hates it.

Darn that's a shame your parner hates it, anime is just another form of media that can be really fun to watch and interact with, denying it feels like such a waste... manyt such cases though, I met a fair deal of people in my life who hated anime.. and it's too bad that seeing such endings give you this kind of feelings! You should maybe stick to the ones that arent about generally a relatable life and the ones that are placed in different settings that it is unreal to imagine yourself in, well it certainly sucks what you feel! I hope that maybe you will convince your partner to watch it, even if it does take a lot of time, if it's something you really love they should understand it sooner or later :) and just make one one exception to let you see that they can make an exception in their hatred even! I sure am hopeful heh, wish you the best!

I think anyone can like anime. There is something for everyone there. Have you tried Ghibli if that floats her boat?

it was a lot easier to enjoy fictional media when i was a kid with hopes and dreams. conversely, i know that some adults find comfort in power fantasies or rags to riches characters, but i've never been able to do that

in regards to your partner, that really sucks~ :( I'd try to get them to watch something that may be similar to the type of series they like to watch of non-anime~ :) For example, I love kids in anime and in general, so when someone wanted to watch a movie with me (she doesn't like anime), she chose one with kids as all the main characters! xD There's so many different types of anime that there's bound to be something for everyone! :) Including you too~ ;3 You just may have to do some research in order to find them! Just try and find anime like forms of media you're better able to handle without all the positivity and stuff~ :) idk what you think, but even popular anime like Steins;Gate, Death Note, and Serial Experiments Lain aren't positive at all~

I always get jealous personally~ >_< It's why I can't handle pretty much any form of romance movie or anime myself very well~ :( They get it alll perfect, and I'm left in a deep mire myself! :/

About the anime positivity letting you down, while I'm not sure if it's the right way to go, perhaps watch something... less positive?
I can see how it may sound like a way to promote bad thoughts, but perhaps it could leave you with something on your mind to process and perhaps feel insightful on a topic?
I know some games and animes didn't left me with a wide smile, but left me thinking deeply about some situations that helped me straighten other thoughts for a while.

Though as to your partner hating it... perhaps you need to find a topic they appreciate in other media.
Sometimes it takes showing people that there can be something of their interest in anime for them to latch on. I know I have someone that completely dismissed anime ("childish and dumb") until I showed that some things could be incredibly grounded and it broadened their view that there's a big range on genres.

Well he has watched a couple with me. It's hard to figure out which ones he'll actually like, but he liked Fruits Basket, Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop. Anything with any kind of "cringe" though he's more averse to.

I think you're right. With the few anime he does like Studio Ghibli would probably have a few he enjoys.

I haven't really been able to enjoy that sort of thing either. Becoming rich as a poor person is rare and most of the materialistic things people want money for don't interest me.

I've seen Death Note, but not the other two yet. Thanks for the recs :3

Which ones would you recommend? I liked Elfen Lied. It was thought provoking and definitely not positive.

I heard you like Elfen Lied, and anime that aren't positive. Please allow me to recommend you some! :D I'm going to give you a whole bunch, but for the ones I like myself, I'll put them in bold! :)

While they might not be entirely tragic, or have that much of a final miserable touch to them they can be quite sad to watch through or just give you empty feelings, neither positive or negative.
Series that do have some positivitism in them but the negativity is still there, or it turns out later to be rather depressing or scary: Madoka Magica, Blood-C, Another, Ergo Proxy, Jigoku Shoujo, Devilman Crybaby, Mahou Shoujo Site, Mahou Shoujo Ikkusei Keikaku, Shiki, Corpse Party, Higurashi.
If you would like to have some more action in it and it being like the main point of the story; Soukou no Strain, Tokyo Ghoul, Hellsing (it's just an amusing anime, characters are not relatable, they can be just cool), Darker than Black, Fate/Zero, Basilisk.
If you feel like watching a comedy that might have relatable elements, check out Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Watamote :)
- I cant promise you that you will like them because obviously I dont know your taste in anime that well, but hearing that you would rather avoid positive animes, it did motivate me to mention some animes that I really liked and others that I didnt like that much and Im aware of how dark they can get, don't be fooled, some just look innocent and nice at first later the proper action begins. Hopefully you will get interested in watching anything from this small list I have made, or maybe you even heard or watched some of them!

Serial Experiments Lain
If you do like Lain after watching it, keep in mind that there is also a PS1 game that you can play on the browser, that is quite cryptic and provides a different experience compared to what games usually are, and there is a short story Lain manga called The Nightmare Of Fabrication, while it is so short that you cant even get in a mood, just read it shortly after you finish anime or when you play the game, it fits the mood nicely.
