  • Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Pretty much what it says in the header. Has anyone ever found an online forum for suicide/mental health that is actually decent?

Not somewhere where people can discuss methods etc., somewhere with more of a peer support and mental health support focus?

There's r/SuicideWatch. That isn't really a forum though, but I don't know anything else.

I feel like forums are mostly a thing of the past and that the only reason this one is as active as it is, is because standard social media sites -- which have gobbled up all the traffic that forums once got -- forbid the discussion.

In Account Settings under Preferences, there is the option to hide the main Suicide Discussion forum, and I want to say this is going to be your best bet unless you want to suffer Reddit and scale back on suicide chatter.

There are other forums out there, but you might be looking at days (or longer) for response times and their tolerance for suicide discussion will probably be minimal.

I think large tech companies want people to believe that old school forums are a thing of the past. This further increases their stranglehold on our attention and the information we have access to, which means more profits for them. In reality, for almost any topic, there are still old school forums alive and well.

To answer OP's question I looked up "mental health forum", and saw several that looked reasonable. You'd probably get more variety too if you try a few different search engines, e.g. Duck Duck Go, Google and Yandex. If you want one where you can openly discuss wanting to CTB without judgment, though, I doubt you'll find better than SaSu.

It's one of my goals to start using old school forums more because they don't wreak havoc on my attention span, they don't make me feel like shit, they feel more like a community, and they actually have higher quality information. (I actually learn things rather than just thinking I'm learning things.)

I just the other day I found a forum for transgender people at all stages (including pre-transition, transitioning, non-transition, de-transition) called susans.org, and so far it seems fantastic. I feel like being trans would have been so much easier if I'd found it sooner.

Hey, thank you, that's awesome that you found that. I think esp. when it comes to the LGBT+ community there are definitely some great orgs out there… I guess with actual mental health crisis it's probably more tricky because I imagine they might want to make sure that folks aren't on there scaring everyone else talking about their suicidal feelings, or the extreme situations they have gotten themselves into in their lives that are causing them to feel suicidal. So I imagine they might dissuade folks posting who are in really extreme states. Which I guess by now I fall into that category really.

But anyway, thank you. I'll have a look around and see what I find.

By the way, maybe you'll like these folks? Never used their service personally but heard down the grape vine that they are good.

Theres one called suicide forum.

It's similar to this forum. You can openly talk about suicide. The only difference is that they don't allow explicit method talk. There are support forums for mental health and other issues people face.

Just realised that this potentially comes across as me saying something I don't mean. Of course people going through mental health crisis should have access to all kinds of spaces where they can talk about that and how they're feeling. And I'm sure that in lots of LGBT+ focused spaces people do talk about having mental health challenges and, in some cases, crises too.

Just that I looked at a suicide focused forum when I was looking for resources for myself the other day and they said on their website the they are "not a crisis space" and people going through crisis should call the police or find a more appropriate resource for that.

Which did make me think that in some ways, folks who are in quite deep levels of mental health crisis, where they feel really suicidal and don't see anyway out and are at risk of doing something to themselves - probably are finding it quite hard to find spaces where they can talk about what they feel and what is going on for them. And possibly that's a reason why sites like this end up getting so much traffic.
