Hi. This is my first post. I hope all my questions are ok to ask.
I was first thinking about using SN to CTB, but after hearing about the possible painful effects I started looking into other options and I came across a method using citric acid, baking soda, and a plastic bag. It looks promising, but I have some questions.

My thought was to mix the water and powdered citric acid in a bowl and put the baking soda in a cup, then put them in a 13 gallon trash bag (double-bagged) on the floor. The cup of baking soda would be to the left of the bowl. I'd put an elastic band around my neck then lay on the floor, put my head in the bag, and slip the band around the bag. Then I'd pour the baking soda into the citric acid/water mixture. My hands are outside the bag so basically I'm grabbing the cup with the bag if that makes sense. If what I've read is correct the large amount of CO2 created by the baking soda and citric acid should knock me out quickly.

First question - I have to ask, is this really a reliable method?
While it sounds good and everything I've read about it seems to make sense, the information I've found on it is limited, and that's why I'm kind of questioning it. I just want to make sure I'm not talking myself into something that's too good to be true. If it is good I have a few more questions about it.

Is it painful at all? Everything I've read about this method said it's not, but I did some research about CO2 in general, not related to the method, and I found some sites that said breathing too much CO2 is painful. Then again some said I'd be knocked out pretty much instantly, which is what the info on the method said and that's what I'm hoping for. If breathing did become painful would pulling my head out of the bag make it stop? Or would the effects last for a while afterwards? If it wouldn't be long lasting if it did happen I won't worry about trying it.

How much baking soda and citric acid would I need to use in a 13 gallon bag?
The only information I found was for a much smaller bag which I practiced with (without the stuff) and I don't feel comfortable using it. I would have to mix the stuff in a container then quickly stick it into the opening of the bag. I practiced with a large soda bottle and it seems too likely that CO2 could escape the bottle before I get it to the bag. Whereas my practice with the 13 gallon bag went very smoothly, and everything is in the bag, so as long as the bag is sealed tight no gas would escape.

Should I take sleeping pills? Or any other type of medication?

Now I'm not expecting it to fail as long as it is a good method and I'm well prepared, but if it does happen to fail will there be other possible side effects besides painful breathing? If so, how long do they last? I know obviously if I do need to take a medication there would be effects from that, but what about from the CO2? I was originally planning to CTB over a weekend when my mom goes to visit her parents. I would've done it Friday night and hopefully that would be enough time to recover if for some reason it fails, but now she won't let me stay home alone for a whole weekend. I'm still alone when she's at work Mon-Fri 8+ hours a day though.

From some of what I've said it probably sounds like I'm kind of doubting it and talking myself out of it. But really I'm just trying to be prepared and make sure I do it right. I'm trying to look at it from every angle, everything that could go right and everything that could possibly go wrong. I know I'm probably overthinking this, but I know it will be hell if I fail and what I did is discovered.

The human body has a natural reflex when there's too much CO2 in the blood. You're going to start fighting to get out of there and you probably won't even notice before the bag is ripped off your head.

I don't see this as painless at all, either

I'm sorry you're contemplating such things, @rue89. This method puzzles and intrigues me too. There was a thread about it here a while ago that might answer some of your questions — I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks. There are 2 articles in that thread about successful CO2 deaths. In one a man used the baking soda and citric acid (this is where I got the idea). In the other one a man used a cylinder of pure CO2 to kill his family and himself. Both articles say they would've passed out quickly. The pure CO2 makes sense that it would be quick. Breathe in pure anything that isn't oxygen and unconsciousness should happen quickly with death shortly after. But now that I think about it I'm not sure how they know that about the citric acid/baking soda one. That of course isn't pure CO2 and there were no witnesses.

This is very interesting method. Not to mention the materials are easy to buy... i like it, Thank you for sharing.

Good point. But maybe the quantities of the two substances let the pathologists extrapolate how much co2 was released and how fast? And/Or the fact that the man died instead of clawing his way out of the bag in a hypercapnic fit ...

That old thread got attention from several good minds, but wound up on an inconclusive note.
