I usually don't talk about politics on here, but I been keeping up with the elections in Brazil. Jair Bolsonaro was declared the winner tonight. He makes Trump seem like Bernie Sanders by comparison.

He has spoken out against the LGBT community, equal rights for women, Brazilians of African decent, and praised the nation's military dictatorship of the 1980s. Of course he is also PRO-LIFE and believes the nation should be ran by religious law.

I have a friend who is on the Left who is in Brazil and determined to struggle despite the loss. I just spoke with him. I admire him but I fear for him. He is a young teacher with a heart of gold and not an enemy in the world.. I speak and write Portuguese fluently and I have known many Brazilians. I had older friends who struggled against the dictatorship that began in 1964 after the AI-5 was imposed. All are now dead, one chose to live in Portugal after Dilma was impeached. He suspected this would come to pass.
I have no words to make things better. I can only hope that more powerful forces in the FAB put a leash on Bolsanaro but it is a very thin hope.

He was actually stabbed just once through the side of what looked liked his lower abdomen. The video is on the internet. He lost 40% of blood and it's likely he could have died had he not received immediate medical attention. He did appear to be in pain, though, but I'm sure the pain would have happened after the knife had left his body and before his pain receptors had been awoken. I learned about him from watching an episode of Last Week Tonight. The negative response that John Oliver got from Brazilians made me think about democracy and my belief that human beings are horrible at picking lessor evils. Americans aren't much better than Brazilians when you think about the fact that many of them still believe that Hillary would have been a worse option than Trump. And what do you do when all of your options are horrible? That appears to be the reason why Bolsonaro was elected.

It's all so depressing. Another reason to CTB.
