• Hey Guest,

An update on the OFCOM situation: As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. OFCOM, the UK’s communications regulator, has singled out our community, demanding compliance with their Online Safety Act despite our minimal UK presence. This is a blatant overreach, and they have been sending letters pressuring us to comply with their censorship agenda.

Our platform is already blocked by many UK ISPs, yet they continue their attempts to stifle free speech. Standing up to this kind of regulatory overreach requires lots of resources to maintain our infrastructure and fight back against these unjust demands. If you value our community and want to support us during this time, we would greatly appreciate any and all donations.

My friend has 3 kids, one with profound disabilities. And recently a rental house came up that's perfect for them, all the adjustments.
So she asked some questions.
Found out this:
The house was fully adapted because an eleven year old boy lived there and tried to take his own life (not sure of method) and fucked up and ended up severely disabled needing specialist care. When he reached 18, an adult, his mum then killed herself as she couldn't cope. The boy (well 18 year old) now lives with his dad apparently. That's why it's now vacant. She thinks the housing officer told her so she wouldn't hear it from the neighbours.

She plans to tell her own kids the story so they won't try suicide because they might end up in a far worse position.

That's so painful to hear. I wonder what would prompt a 11 year old kill themselves. 😢

When I went to college I lived in a cabin that was built by a father and son, and the son killed himself. I didn't want to find out any more details from the real estate agent, like where exactly he did it. I wasn't too concerned about living there because it was Alaska and suicide is pretty common in that state.

It was a tragic story, but not nearly as tragic as the story above. That poor father. I would guess that the boy and his mother both had a genetic mental health disorder like bipolar, which has very high suicide rates.

I wonder why it's more common in Alaska. Daylight? Cold?

Tragic story....
But sadly that's what happens when people don't have access to safe options, like in Switzerland. They are left to try on their own, and sadly failure is more common than success in that case, leaving people in a far worse position than they were to begin with.

An 11 year old (girl) did it who lives close by to me. I'd see her walking to school every day with her mum then suddenly no, and that's what she'd done. Chucked herself off a high bridge. Kids have just the same worries as we do.

Whilst I'd hope kids would at least give adulthood a go, see if their pain is 'just' adolescence or circumstances, I totally get it they'd want to. Life is hard and some of us realise it early on.

I agree with assisted suicide/access to safe ends for adults but not for kids.

Many converging factors, Alaska's suicide rate is 4 times the national average (and one of the highest rates in the world):
  • it's dark almost 24 hours a day in the winter
  • extreme cold
  • widespread poverty
  • lack of opportunities, extreme boredom
  • high rates of alcoholism and substance abuse
  • easy access to firearms
  • social isolation in remote villiages
  • lack of counseling and psychiatry services
  • large population of veterans
  • large population of Native Americans

I was 12 when I first wanted to ctb. Constant bullying and "friends" abandoning me. Pretty sure that's what started the decline in mental health and lead to anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and constantly feeling unfulfilled and a loser and of course my attempts later on. So I get what these kids were thinking about in their lowest of moments.

Suicide is the eighth-leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 11 in the US, so it's a major issue, not just a few outliers.

My mom left me when I was 4-5, with a lot of instability earlier due to alcoholism and drugs. I didn't have any siblings, we lived in a rural area, and my dad was an alcoholic and workaholic so I was isolated and emotionally neglected. I was never consciously aware of how that impacted me, but deep down it left a void of insecurity that planted the seeds of suicide in me at a young age. I didn't have means so it was purely theoretical, but if I had gotten ahold of my dad's gun, who knows?

Other kids have it much worse. Abuse. Bullying. Severe psychiatric disorders. Poverty. When kids are exposed to adult problems it's overwhelming, and they don't have the adult brain to process it. They can also be highly impulsive, especially when ADHD is a factor. It's not surprising that some of them are committing suicide.

That's so incredibly sad. Kids are generally more resilient than adults and their fear of death typically high. However, there's always outliers and circumstances. Sometimes mental illness early on.... genetics, exposures to chemicals including psychiatry, etc.

As said, suicide among kids is becoming more common now but still pretty rare because kids don't typically die and especially not by suicide....so even though suicide is the 8th leading cause, it still doesn't happen much. I would blame it more on social media, online bullying, the constant use of computers/smart phones, exposures to medications at an early age, isolation, our toxic culture. Think about history. People, including children, have always had to live with some horrific stuff, events, poverty, their parent dying because of XYZ disease, abuse, not enough food, wars, etc. Kids have always been exposed to difficulty and traumatic events but weren't suicidal, not like they are today. There's something more happening to cause this.

What safe options do we have??😭 assisted suicide is only allowed in specific cases and never for mental illness.

We don't have any, that's the tragedy. And that's why things like this happen. Imagine the suffering that could have been avoided if only the boy in OP's story had a safe way out.
