• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Definitely, but we are probably two decades away from this.

The question really will be that will humanity do with this and will they be able to do with mental health issues, will they be able to fix them?

I hope so. With neuralink it seems possible but there is probably a limit to what it can do. I'm not sure.

Well they do say the last person to die of old age is already alive today.

I think dying and old age will be very different over the next 20 to 30 years given the rapid advances now.

It will be even more complicated if they can digitalise our consciousness.

I want my body to die off but I might want my consciousness alive to be with my husband. I'm not sure. It also sounds like a fucking nightmare like the black mirror episode where they put the person in the teddy bear and the wife was Forced to watch her husband and child go about their lives.

Highly doubtful. Even representing the basic physical state of a piece of mouse brain about the size of a grain of sand pushes current technology to the limit (petabytes of data generated from 100 million images taken from the tissue sample).

And even if it were possible it's not you. It's a copy or clone of your consciousness. A replica taken at the time of the copy. You would still cease to perceive at the point your original biological brain dies. Transfering consciousness the way it happens in movies is sci-fi magic. There's no plausible way it could happen from our current understanding of consciousness and how it emerges from the biological processes in the brain.

These links discuss some of the challenges and possibilities:

Thank you. The first one was interesting. But I don't, respectfully want to read anything on Quora.

Fair. To be honest most of the answers on there aren't very helpful as they avoid the part of the question that reads "without creating two selves". I thought the other article was quite insightful and thorough.

I remember a comedian responding to the idea that science will be able to extend our lives well past 100 routinely in the future. And he said "great which part of my life are you extending? Oh right, the shit part at the end when I'm old and have arthritis and my mind has turned to mush" lol

Now, if you could extend a person's youth that might be worth sticking around for - maybe - but 20 extra years in the winter of your life. No thank you!

(Over a long-enough time scale) Very likely we will upload our consciousness, but an alternative is that we will keep embedding hardware in our bodies until our bodies are no longer dominated by biology.

If you copied the connectivity between all cells in the brain, including the strength of the synapses, you would get something that was close enough to "you" that it would argue that it was you. The only advantage of moving the neurons is that it solves the problem of what to do with the original to avoid having two entities claiming to be the same person.

One thing to note, however, is that even if it starts as you, if the hardware is different it will learn very differently in the future from the way your current wetware would learn.

Some food for thought:
- Many people have had out of body experiences or near death experiences where they saw things multiple rooms over that they couldn't have otherwise seen or known about, and later were able to verify that what they saw/heard actually took place.
- People have had vivid near death experiences (in which they receive info that they didn't know about before and could verify that to be correct after the fact or had a life review where they saw and felt what their actions did unto others) while their brain activity was measured to be flat, aka no activity.
- Despite scientists searching for decades, there is still no evidence of near death experiences being hallucinations of a dying brain or having other materialistic causes.
- Sometimes dementia patients suddenly regain full clarity a few hours before death, even though their brains are heavily impaired. This is called terminal lucidity and science has yet to find an explanation for this.
- There have been multiple kids who reported about their past life, and were able to recall details that were later verified to be true and they could not have possibly known otherwise.

Personally given these facts and more, I do not think that consciousness is an "emergent property of the brain" or otherwise needs your brain to exist. Idk if it could ever be extracted/transplanted through materialistic means.
