Discussion Ever wonder if there’s people you know irl here too?

Maybe it seems far fetched, but especially for those who live in small countries(like me) it seems a lot more likely
I've met people on here who I actually have mutual acquaintances with which is so crazy
How do you think you'd feel if you met someone you knew on here? Would you talk to them or just avoid/block them?
I have a sense that there could be a few people I know irl who've at least visited this
I often wonder if anyone I know will come across my profile/posts after I ctb...

If a friend saw some of my posts on here they'd be able to tell for sure it's me lol
I'm not sure I really care either though, it is what it is, I'll be gone soon hopefully anyway and I just hope that if anyone I know irl does see my posts in the future it will help them better understand the site

Yeah, a few of my friends are aware I'm on a suicide forum but I've never said which website (one thinks it's reddit) and most of the others believe it's all recovery-based so they don't pry any further. I think if they knew I was on this exact site they'd be able to find my posts easily, even the ones where I've vented about some of them. I don't know if any of them would understand this site unfortunately.

Can't relate unfortunately(?), I feel like I know too many people and too many people know me and the thought of everyone talking about me once I've ctb makes me a bit uncomfortable haha

I'm waiting (and dreading) for it to happen. As the world moves on, it's no surprise that more people are suicidal. The friends I have left are all of an age and it would not surprise me at all to find that they suffer some existential or circumstantial depression. If it's that bad, using the internet to explore your options is not a far reach, and if you do that, inevitably you will come here. I really hope they don't ever feel that need.

You'd have to asked yourself how they found this website in the first place and what their intentions are.
Probably finding methods to ctb or struggling themselves? I doubt they really care about others under those circumstances.
And even if they found you, the most decent thing would be to just send a pm to clear up any confusion.

No, because I am a nobody and do not exist to most people in real life. The only few individuals that do "know" me are just acquaintances; I do not have a connection to them and we do not know of each other personally or even at all, so if they were here then it is unlikely that we would recognize each other.

It's actually kinda funny to me, in an absurd way. If someone in meatspace or online elsewhere recognized me on here, how will they be able to confront me? The first question I'd ask is why they're on a ctb forum in the first place, and I think it would be too awkward for them to talk about.

I don't know, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing. If they're on here, they most likely would be for the same reason as me (to ctb). If nothing else, it may mean you could have a partner you could trust.

Why is everyone worried that is they knew someone on here, they would be reported or something like that? I mean, couldn't you just as easily report the other person?

I'm pretty sure that I don't, even though it wouldn't bother me that much. That person would probably have the same reasons as me. However, this forum is not especially known in my country, even among those who struggle the most and those that treat many of them. I've talked to one fellow Norwegian here that sent me a PM, but other than that I haven't seen so many around here or heard anyone mention the forum on other platforms. There was (and is still going for sure), a big hidden instagram community, but it's nothing like this. This is a welcoming community that's pro-choice, but the instagram community was encouraging self harm and ctb on a whole different level. I see fellow Norwegians write in forums searching for a place like this, because there's so few places you can speak freely about ctb thoughts, but I feel like I can't tell them about this website. Have anyone been in this position? I feel like I have some responsibility if that person successfully ends their life after they've read the methods described here and so on, so I would prefer them finding the community on their own. What do you guys think about this?

Doubt it mainly because I don't know many people and of those people I do know nobody has expressed to me that they have depression or suicidal thoughts. Suicide is really frowned upon so I'm guessing anyone with those thoughts would seek out help quite early and not let it spiral out of control.

There is somebody on here that I know irl. I can't even remember how it came up in conversation but it was weird knowing theyre here too. We both knew so much more about each other than we probably should because of the posts we made, and soon every conversation we had was about suicide, and they'd made a threat to tell my family about an attempt. So I cut them off. I hope they're doing okay though.

I have a feeling a member I've talked with is someone I personally know, as in dated. But I don't say anything.

A friend and I discovered we were both on here. It brought us closer together. I'm sure with the amount of people here it's not far fetched to know some people or think we do.

Yes. I come from a country with a rather small population. Whenever I talk to a fellow countryman or countrywoman I always ask which part of the country they're from. The reason is that I'm a teacher and if I met a pupil or former pupil here it would present a difficult situation of monumental proportions. The risk might be slim, but it's a risk I'm not prepared to take.

No. I write each post as if family and friends are on this site, so as not to leave enough crumbs to be traceable to myself. If ever someone else disclosed enough personal information wherby I figured out who they are in IRL, most likely I would respect their anonymity, because, in part, to acknowledge them requires that I acknowledge myself. If for some reason they are in crisis and reaching out to the board for help, this might be the only way I would acknowledge that I know them through DM to try and possibly help. But, even in this scenario I might look at this on a case by case basis given the individual, as acknowledging them might not be the wisest decision.
