Has anyone here applied for M.A.I.D in Canada or anyone where else?

I almost did a few yrs ago but I feel like I will not qualify with the physical illnesses I have. Plus just always changed my mind. Plus also worried about being dehumanized during the experience.

Curious to hear anyone's experience / get a lil more info on what its like.

I have applied for MAID. The fight has been going on for 3 years now. My experiences have been a bit of an outlier with the process (at least I hope it has been) and not pleasant in the slightest. I can try to answer your questions for what info you want about the process.

I called but they told me I needed to be referred through my family doctor. I already had an appointment to talk about suspected schizophrenia, I didn't want to just throw in "hey, I was also wondering, can I die with MAiD?" as well since he's already looking at me like I might need to be committed.

When I was hanging up the phone the MAiD lady just told me 'I hope you feel better...'

I'm in the proces of finding two psychiatrists who are willing to guide me through the process. It's very likely that I'll qualify, but it takes forever and tbh it sounds scarier than ctb.

I found some beautiful documentaries on the subject, specially for the country I'm in. They didn't give me the impression that the patients were dehumanised. The doctors were very compassionate and understanding. Maybe there are some documentaries about the subject in your region too?

I tried. Contacted dyingwithdiginity and they refused to help because I only have a mental illness no physical illness.

I am convinced they only want to remove the physically disabled from the tax system. If you can flip burgers or pour coffee they want to keep you as a wage slave.

Might I ask what you tried applying for? There are a number of conditions that are not mental health in terms of MAID that even the people that work in the program don't know are not mental health conditions. I am trying to get MAID for autism myself and every single doctor/nurse/person that I spoke to in the program about it went "THAT'S A MENTAL HEALTH REASON! NOOOOO!" Then I show/tell them about their own documentation for the umpteenth time that it's a valid reason to apply and I still get issues. I've been told that because I could figure that out that means that I'm really smart. Smart enough that euthanizing me would be a waste of resources so the doctor wouldn't do the assessment on that reason alone. So, yes, I'm beginning to lean that way too after literally being told that my suffering didn't matter because I could still 'contribute' to society in some way. That wasn't even the worst of what happened to me from those doctors.

What help was dyingwithdignity saying they could've offered. I was refused help beyond them saying they could give me information about MAID and could provide a witness to sign my application if needed. They told me they don't advocate for people or give anything that could be medical advise when I asked for help.
