As human beings, we like to think ourselves to be above all else, and often mistake ourselves for higher beings, when, in fact, we're nothing more than a questionably smart monkey.
If a human and animal were to both suffer a significant life-changing injury resulting in loss of autonomy, the animal would promptly be put out of its misery, whilst the human would be stabilized and have to endure a lifetime of agony (unless they were able to access euthanasia, which isn't easily accessible).
It's a shame that human life is held to such a high degree, mostly due to religious beliefs.
