• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Whenever anything happens about depression or mental health shit, there's always the usual "it'll get better" or "it'll be alright" stuff, I'm reminded of that

When I used to try to ask for "help" they always used to say things like that, I don't know why people are so stupid and don't know that anything that is moral doesn't work, I don't know how they can't think that there are people like me who don't care that in the future they will be fine, I just want cbt

I still think that society's way of dealing with these issues is making people worse instead of better. I don't know if it only happens in my country or something but I'm tired to the point that I get lazy to even talk to anyone and I always have to avoid everything

I feel the same way. Talking to anyone seems futile, because of the canned responses. It might be a cynical view, but so many people are brainwashed by social media they regurgitate the same phrases and cliches and expect to seem genuine.

This reminds me of a post I saw on reddit the other day where someone was asking for tips to get over their long-standing depression, and the OP specifically mentioned that they had already tried multiple different medications and that they exercised/went out everyday, and what was the top comment? "Eat healthy and exercise." Next comment? "Go for a walk everyday." Really ruffled my feathers; some people just can't seem to wrap their heads around chronic CTB ideation.

Dude, phrases like that have been repeated from hell and back since long before social media. The potential issue, I think, is that people generally don't know how to respond to these types of situations, which is understandable. It can be hard to think of something to say on the spot in these kinds of situations and many don't want to risk potentially saying something that may hurt the other person, so they just end up saying the same shit they hear others in similar situations say. There are, of course, the dumbasses who say this type of shit and think they are doing actual good and those who say those things to get you off their back.

At the end of the day, I feel like it would be better to just be honest and admit that you don't have any clue as to how to respond to someone opening up about their mental illness rather than just repeating a bunch of empty platitudes. I'm pretty sure that most people would be understanding if they just admitted to the fact that they don't feel equipped to know what to say in response and it arguably does a better job of demonstrating that they do care.

You're overthinking it.

Suicide = bad and dark. Then it's bad and dark. That's it. That's how people actually process shit every day.

Not only that, but the ego is part of the problem too. Appearances and good Samaritan complex.

I'm over-thinking nothing. It does not take that much brain power to come to this conclusion. People think that "suicide and bad and dark". Okay then, but how does that relate to how they respond to it? It's not like your answer in any way challenges what I said. If anything, it just furthers supports it since the point of what I am saying is that this can be a difficult topic to tackle and a lot of people don't know how to respond to things like this.

Also, I did mention the fact that some people do it for egotistical reasons.
There are, of course, the dumbasses who say this type of shit and think they are doing actual good and those who say those things to get you off their back.

At the end of the day, simplifying it down to just "people are egotistical" is fucking stupid, especially when a lot of those people others open up to are usually people who genuinely care about them. It's almost like not everyone is extremely full of themselves and some people may actually give a shit about others. It's almost like people are not a fucking monolith.

I hear that crap whenever life's BS is weighing on not only me, but others. I hate it too. People forget that simply listening is good. Admitting you don't know what to say is good, but no, they feel like playing the role of what they think a nice or good person would say and those things seem much more like a flat denial of whatever you may have taken all your courage to say.

I hate these phrases too and I don't understand as to why people still continue to say it. Actually, no, I do understand why and it's ignorance caused by how difficult and diverse people's issues are and how not every issue can be as easily solved as doing trivial things like taking a walk or seeing a therapist. My mum is full of toxic positivity and pro life sentiments and even she acknowledged that statements like "just go and take a shower" or "just do more shopping" are futile.

I also find it interesting at the perspective that these people are coming from and how none of it applies to me... at all. They say stuff like "you matter" but the thing about me is that I don't have a low self esteem and so I do actually acknowledge that my suffering matters (to me of course) which is precisely why I want to be dead. Another phrase they use is "you're not alone" but the thing about this is that loneliness isn't at all linked to my desire for an earlier death.

If people weren't so pro life and they had the ability to actually understand me, I'd open up to them. It wouldn't make me crave life but it'd be nice to at least chat to those who get it

Can't really blame anybody for not knowing any different if they've not gone through severe mental illness themselves tho.

I imagine they do believe they're helping since those kind of phrases probably do help people going through a minor/mild depression or something, but unless they've researched this sort of thing, probably have no idea how shitty it is for someone with a severe mental illness to hear.
