• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

I can't stand it when people use the word "unalive" instead of "suicide". It comes off as incredibly disrespectful to use a made-up childish word when talking about something as serious as ending one's own life. I understand why people feel they have to say it as many social media sites punish users for saying the word suicide. If you so much as mention suicide in a YouTube video, a massive trigger warning appears over the video and you are required to sign in to watch it. Regardless of the context- even if it's just discussing a fictional work that involves suicide- videos may be subject to this for daring to mention this taboo topic. TikTok is even worse because it straight up blocks videos with certain words from being published at all. Online censorship is an extremely broad topic but it's unfortunately very rare for people to mention how suicidal people are impacted when they're trying to find community.
I think there are two main reasons why platforms feel obligated to do this. Firstly, it's a liability and legal issue. No one wants to be blamed for someone's death and since it's easy to point the finger at a faceless group, the internet is often subject to blame. The other reason is out of a naive desire to help and prevent suicide. While trying to prevent deaths is a noble cause, there comes a point where boundaries are overstepped. From both personal experience and anecdotes of others, I can confirm that a total censorship of suicide leads to those suffering from mental disorders feeling more isolated than ever. If mere self expression is enough to get us silenced, why bother seeking help? Why bother expressing ourselves? These are the messages that are being sent when discussion of suicide is censored.
It's for these reasons that websites like Sanctioned Suicide exist. It's why the suicide rates aren't slowing down. It's why so many people feel utterly hopeless. By making information on this subject scarce, you only force suicidal people to retreat into isolated communities and withdraw from the outside world. This is how people end up with doomer mindsets believing that there is nothing worthwhile on Earth. To truly solve the mental health crisis, censorship isn't the solution. You can close your eyes to a house fire, but that doesn't make it stop burning. The only way to truly make people feel like living is to let them express why they don't.

I agree. Same with "sewerslide" and "grape" for rape. Like what the fuck?? Why cant we just talk about serious topics like that without having to censor the words? All it does is create more stigma

Although in recent centuries humanity has been breaking the fear of naming things as they are, I believe there is something in humans that prevents this from happening at a faster pace.

There is a natural tendency in us to create imaginary realities that distance us from the harshness and monotony of being biological and finite beings. Also, there is the mistaken intuition that facing reality in a less romantic way can only lead to negative outcomes, which, in my opinion, is incorrect.

"Grape" is another super frustrating one because they're not even hiding the word at that point. It's just being childish about a super traumatizing subject for no reason.

idk why people think censoring is a good idea, but respectful ways exist, like muting the parts where you mention it or changing letters for numbers. this mainly for content creation to not get banned, but irl if anyone uses unalive just feels insulting. also, euphemisms exist for a reason, and unalive isnt working as one

I think censoring words with asterisks or replacing letters with numbers is also disrespectful, but this is the fault of the platforms mandating this rather than on the people using the website. I've never heard anyone say "unalive" in real life unironically but I'd lose a lot of respect for that person if I did.

Yeah, there's something that smacks of condescension and insensitivity with that word. I've never cared for it, myself.

"I w@nt to unalive mys3If s0 b@dly. This w0rld is s0 full of h@t3 and grapists and unalivers!" ⬅️ every sentence you see online nowadays.

I genuinely hate all the censored speech that has been going on as of late, along with the fact that it is now starting to bleed into real life. I also hate it when people type like this one here. With that in mind, social media platforms are forcing people to censor themselves due to advertisers. Content that is considered to be unfriendly to advertisers tends to be censored, which includes content focused on suicide.

This kind of self-censorship exists because you'll get punished for using the actual words on large social media platforms. It's not really meant to be disrespectful, it's to avoid censorship.

I don't like "unalive" but I can tolerate it, at least on the communities that are censored.
But I cannot stand "sewerslide".

I hate it too. Why can't people use the words as they are? It's so baffling to me

It's just an example of how a code word to get around algorithmic based censorship trickled into the common vernacular. Things have loosened up around that specific word but at one point saying or typing 'suicide' almost guaranteed it to be censored in some way.

just a perfect example that living in a "free" country doesn't mean much when most places in the online space will censor your freedom of speech & expression. unfortunately until more social media platforms adopt a censorship free approach we'll continue to see these terms and new ones eventually. unfortunately for us censorship has only increased in the past few years. doesn't look like that will stop anytime soon.

Well those of us who played Ocarina of Time as children are afraid to mention "re-dead" so I guess they had to choose "un-alive"
