I mean, I used to hate therapy and now I've realized it can actually hurt some people.
I think this all depends on the patient and the professional dealing with me.
My best advice for people starting with therapy would be: "if you don't like your therapist, get another one ASAP but don't give up on therapy. Some of them don't suck so much" (just like teachers, in my case haha)

I don't doubt there is such a thing as treatment resistant depression however personally in my opinion it frustrates me to hear about people living in horrible abusive environments say they have this. No, they are stuck. If one is in a truly shitty environment no amount of treatment is going to fix them. They are depressed because their existences are piles of shit.
I don't like to see people punishing themselves with disorders when their situations are inescapable and unable to change or get better.

I agree with you but at the same time even successful people and people that raised in relatively good environment face depression, schizophrenia and other psyche disorders. But it is very controversial question what causes psyche disorders, genetic predisposition or stressful situations and toxic environment. Often these two factors go together.
Personally, I had some stressful situations in the past, but now I dont face stressful situations, I work very few and my job is not stressful, but still I cannot recover. Inspite of not having toxic environment. Also I take meds.

It's so easy to write off treatment resistant depression when the only forms of easily accessible treatment is becoming an ssri zombie and/or 50 minute per week talk/cbt therapy.
It's why I think everyone should look into alternative therapies that aren't wildly known like emdr therapy, dbt therapy, ketamine infusions (expensive unfortunately), microdosing shrooms thc lsd lithium, I've heard people ramping up magnesium and zinc supplements too and that's helped them a lot.
(By everyone I mean people who use this site, normal people can get by with just the minimum treatment I mentioned first)

My best therapist of more than 20 years was also an endocrinologist. She had my DNA tested by a company called Genomind. I suspected that I inherited the chronic depression, and it's right there on paper. They tested me for both my metabolism of a wide range of antidepressant medications, and also for a range of pain medication, as I have terrible arthritis that has limited my activities severely. It's been very valuable to know what will and won't work, and why, and it's helped a great deal with pain management. I've had bad and good therapists. You have to do the work no matter who you choose. I think it's good not to make hasty decisions. List some 'test' issues to get some groundwork out of the way with a new therapist. Ethics, religion, politics, anything that you feel could get in the way of your being comfortable and honest - it helps to have common ground. Even if all you do is go to one of the AA meetings that is close to your situation - give it an honest try. We only get one life, and there's always a chance something will change yours for the better.
I wish you luck and success. I gained 20 years from just that one doctor, and I've probably tried 20 others. It's hard, it's a lot of work. But it just might be worth it.
