Probably suicidal, why else would he do that? Some people here have interesting method ideas such as "I will jump from a hot air balloon" and what have you. But he shouldn't involve anyone else.

The story. This just happened so more details will come out later I'm sure, but this isn't the kind of thing that people thoughtfully plan out to do when suicidal, regardless of their opinion on others around them, because plane doors can't be opened when the plane is pressurized and flying at 30,000 feet (lower altitudes and plane malfunctions are a different matter).

For me personally, it's essential that I don't harm anyone around me due to CTB. But I think this was much more likely to be a case of mental illness rather than a thought-out, deliberate CTB attempt.

That suicide urge was so powerful! I feel bad for the passengers, I'm sure they were terrified!

I voted for selfish because it wouldn't be fair to cause hundreds of people death in a plane, especially if they had no direct involvement in said person's suffering. Additionally, it may also be a possibility that some people are just crazy and irrational to do that, so I'm not ruling that out either.

It may be that someone who would do that is delusional and thinks that it is justified in some way.
But I do think it is selfish for a rational person to hurt other people when trying to end their own suffering.

I think no judgments can be made until peaceful suicide is free and available to all for free. So, I don't judge. Maybe it's a way to protest, unfortunately innocent people get caught up in it, it's always happened in history. Here in Italy a region committed terrorism for 30 years before obtaining the special regional status from the state and many innocent people died. This is why giving rights to everyone is a moral duty. Maybe this case doesn't have this purpose, but we can't know. Perhaps he was capable of committing suicide only in that way in the absence of a legal and free peaceful way.

So, I don't judge
i guess you also don't judge mass shooters and suicide-terrorists.

he could have hung himself or jumped in front of a train or from a 30 story building or shot himself if he was that desperate.

you are the reason why people think we are impulsive and incapable of critical thinking...

No it is never, never justified to take other people with you. It's not your place to take the lives of people who want to live, just as it's not their place to force you to stay alive. I think it's most likely that this man was delusional, hallucinating or something else that impaired his thinking. Whether that was caused by mental illness or illicit drugs I don't know.

The word terrorism should be defined. For me religions are also terrorism and have killed more people in the name of God than any other cause. No, don't point fingers at me.

I mean…there's something else going on there. Among the various methods I've imagined, none of them involved jumping from a commercial plane going 500 mph and sucking all of its passengers out like a pool drain.

I can't really make a judgement until peaceful suicide methods are legalised. If peaceful suicide methods were legalised and people still kept on taking others with them, sure, I could call them selfish then. Of course I can't say it's justified either per se but I can't call it selfish either

I posted an update to the story as it's still not evident of the man in question plans. The article states he was agitated and informed the flight attendant, "He needed to exit the aircraft now!" The plane was at 30,000 ft. The man was in the act of trying to open the plan door and that's when the other passengers sprung into action! I'm sure they will post a message saying the man had severe mental health issues and escorted to the nearest psych hospital, as he certainly deserve to be!

I think people need to realize that it's impossible for a person to open a door mid-flight. The difference in air pressure means the force on the door is immense. You would literally have to be superman to open it.

I Will always vote for CTB without harming others because harming others could possibly ruin someone's life depending on how the trauma affects them.

It's why no matter how simple it would be to 'accidentally' loose control of my car on a highway or interstate, (as intrusive thoughts that pop up), even the possibility of it taking someone innocent with me or even just traumatizing or physically hurting them absolutely horrifies me. If I'm miserable it's one thing for me to CTB to find peace but I don't need to subject people who have a chance at life and/or to be happy to something awful too.

Thought here I think that man was simply not thinking straight in the moment for any number of possible reason but was most definitely not all there. If he was seriously suicidal he probably would've researched and realized that it was impossible.
