  • Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Brain : "Hey there"
You, in an exasperated groan: "hello"
Brain: "trying to sleep are we ?"
You: "yes that was the plan"
Brain: "well yeah you could do that..."
You: "good, thanks goodni"
Brain: "OOOORR"
You: "what?"
Brain: " you could remember every mistake you've made, how ugly you are, how time is relative and you mean entirely nothing in the grand scheme of things"
You: "Thanks brain, good job"
Brain: "so you're going to stay up all night thinking of every mistake you've made? Every time you fucked up? Like that time you went to a non school shirt day in your pyjamas? Or awkwardly naruto ran away from the girl you liked because she wouldn't go to the Christmas dance with you?"
You: "thank you brain, I really needed to hear that (sarcastically)"
Brain: "naa you didn't, but you're thinking about it now, enjoy"

Beating yourself up is generally non-productive. One way to mange such unhelpful thoughts is to first run them through a truth filter. For example if you were to take the thought that you are ugly and run it through a truth filter, it can lose much of its ability to hurt. First nobody is really a zero or a ten. We are all somewhere in the middle. Secondly there are many layers that contribute to attractiveness such as humor and kindness.

A second filter through which to run a random thought is a utility filter. With this step one determines how useful the thought is. It might be true about some past mistake, but if you have learned all you can from it, apologized or made restitution, there may not be much more that can be done so the usefulness of the thought has vanished.

The final step is to question the reason for the thought. It may be the mental equivalent of self-harm. It may provide a stimulus to which one is drawn.

Christians are told to take every though captive to Christ. While this admonition may not be useful for non-Christians, it does reflect a general importance of our thought life and how if it is not under our control, it can make life miserable.

When that happens to me, I think of all the good things I have done; I also pick up a favorite book and start reading. It gives an alternative thing to think about and helps those other thoughts to be crowded out.

My internal monologue has been ceaselessly droning on for as long as I can remember. Doesn't really bother me.

Sounds familiar. Except my internal monologue is not so polite. And there's no funny jokes. No punchline. Frankly, it's not a monologue at all. More of a horror & noir exibition.
Here! Behold some generic scene where you are either unbereably lonely or gruesomely dead.
The fucker shows it just for a second, then moves on to the next reveal. Then he just hangs around, sitting on my chest, making television look fuzzy.

Brain: "I'm going to fuck you up all day today."
Me: "fine"
Brain: "and tomorrow"
Me: "fine"
Brain: "I'm even going to do it in your sleep, and you WILL remember everything"
Me: "fine"
Brain: "I'm NEVER going to give you peace, I'll ALWAYS be here."
Me: "you realise one day I will kill you"
Brain: "fine"

I could fill a book with all the internal monologues I used to have with myself. On Facebook. For many to see. They were severely negative and even downright abusive. Thinking about it makes me cringe now but I still have these talks to myself on occasion.
