• Hey Guest,

An update on the OFCOM situation: As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. OFCOM, the UK’s communications regulator, has singled out our community, demanding compliance with their Online Safety Act despite our minimal UK presence. This is a blatant overreach, and they have been sending letters pressuring us to comply with their censorship agenda.

Our platform is already blocked by many UK ISPs, yet they continue their attempts to stifle free speech. Standing up to this kind of regulatory overreach requires lots of resources to maintain our infrastructure and fight back against these unjust demands. If you value our community and want to support us during this time, we would greatly appreciate any and all donations.

There's some validity to those points... but they're also applicable to just about any social platform, not just forums, and not just artificial spaces.

Isolation in echo chambers is problematic. Spaces where likeminded people get together to discuss and develop things, is not inherently bad though.

They do realize that they are on Reddit, right? All of those problems are arguably worse on that site compared to most forums. Hell, not that long ago there was a huge issue on the subreddit r/ehbuddyhoser due to a mod having a huge power trip and trying to change a bunch of rules on the subreddit. It was to the point where they were trying to make it so that you could only post in English despite it being a Canadian shitposting subreddit.

I find this part funny:
You've always got to ask yourself after spending a considerable amount of time on forums like these is:What is this accomplishing? What is this doing for me? Is there a positive net gain?

Its accomplishment and what it is doing is that it doesn't make you feel as bored, sad, alone, etc. And that's the positive gain too. It's the same question asked different ways almost lol

Edit: I think people forget that things don't need to be monumental for it to have value

"Echo chambers"

Basically every space, offline or online, works a bit like a echo chamber. The majority tries to impose their opinions to the minority. At least forums are not created to be an echo chamber, like reddit is, with its upvotes and downvotes promoting the mainstream opinions.

"Moderators will throw the hammer to you"

While it's true that some forums have bad mods, I like strict mods. Mods are supposed to moderate, and too many people think that freedom of speech means that being disrespectful is acceptable.

"What is this accomplishing"

Socializing, getting advice, making friends and having fun with them, discussing specific themes and hobbies...

Surely though, we're drawn to forums with like minded people = echo chambers. Wouldn't we feel out of place if everyone constantly had different opinions to us and challenged what we were saying? Different I guess if someone's looking for debate.

I also find it kind of amusing/ ironic when people use forum space to complain about the forum. Sometimes you get it here too. Occassionally, I see posts moaning about how boring it's become. So it's like- post something interesting then! Don't be relying on other members to entertain you!

I guess we use these spaces to vent out how we're feeling so, the whole: 'Being here is feeling like a waste of my time' might be valid. However, I tend to feel a bit defensive when people criticize forums like that. I kind of want to respond: 'Don't stay here then! It's a simple problem to solve!'

I get it that some forum mods might be on some power trip, so maybe that criticism is fair. There again- they're most likely giving up their time for free and dealing with a whole load of agro. And without them, forums likely couldn't exist because you would get the odd bit of extreme behaviour- bullying, grooming, likely illegal activity.

Anyhow- why do people whinge about stuff they're not even having to pay for? If they hate it that much- they should just try other things. Or, better still- set up their own platform and show everyone else how it's done.

...Ok, what the hell could be changed? A forum is literally supposed to be a place designed for discussion around a certain topic, how could it possibly be run differently?

Also reddit is literally a platform for mini forums, I don't think anyone can disagree with that. By posting on r/self, this user is posting on the self forum on reddit.

On the topic of echo chambers, I've heard a lot of people say that a good way to avoid them is to follow content online you don't necessarily agree with but like... No, that's stupid. If that were the case, I'd have a bunch of right wing MAGA bullshit on all of my feeds, which sounds like an absolutely miserable time. I'm not going to actively avoid the content I like seeing, that's idiotic.

A Redditor complaining about other websites for mod abuse might just be the funniest thing I've read all month.

I didn't last long on Reddit, and I think it's the forum where I've lasted the least.
I've been on many forums and Facebook groups. But I left a long time ago; in fact, this forum may be my last, because in the past I wanted "solutions" to my existential doubts, but that's in the past now. Reddit sucks, and most forums are populated by people either looking to prey on vulnerable people or pretentious people who think that what you're feeling can be solved by "doing your best."

Sources: My experience in many forums.

How does the REDDITOR not know we are prone to Tribalism, echo chamber = tribalism, yes it is bad especially when it's used to channel hate but it happens literally everywhere in one way or another. The biggest problem is not the echo chambers, it's the trolls and powertripping mods, that come to the internet and type random shit because hahaha no one will take it seriously anyways or ban people because it's fun and it's just a random forum, like okay...if I barge in a Tennis match and steal the ball and punch the athelete in the face and then run around I can say the same thing but I'd get a few rackets broken on my back as a bonus and unlike the reddit account I can't grow more vertebrae back.

The people who have powertrips and the trolls ruin forums, not the echo chambers.
