  • Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Hi, has anyone got a good private psychiatrist in London?

I am just out of hospital and the medication they have put me on is going to kill me. So I need someone who actually listens which I know is rare in a psychiatrist....

If you have someone to recommend please pm me

assuming your going private I would expect any to be better than what you would expect via nhs. I'm not in the London area but might suggesting going on the BUPA website (even if ur not insured) they will have approved psychiatrists which I expect may have better quality control.

I think they are all the same. Plus I've tried most of the medications.

They seem to be about £500 for an appointment then £220 or something for a follow up. To pay that much money and not be listened to by a psychiatrist is a killer. I know they won't let me have a say in what medication they give me.

I think the difference with private is that your their customer as swell as patient - they tend to give you better quality care for it.

That price seems quite a lot, are you able to drive a little out of London?

I'm seeing a Psychiatrist at the end on the month, obviously I can't say much about them yet - but my psychologist did personally recommend them.

He offers assessments in Bedford, Colchester and Chelmsford so not too far from London and can also do it via video call. He charges £240 for the assessment and £160 for the follow up, so much cheaper than what you seen. He does have a couple month waiting list tho.

I have no idea if he can help you for your problem, but what I like about him is that before you book he asks via email what your problems are/why you see seeking a psych and he will only offer the appointment if he thinks he can help you so less likely you will waste your monies.

Happy to PM his details if you want.

We cannot publicly name individuals as that is against the site rules. Unfortunately, in any case, few people here will have much experience of using a private psychiatrist in London. Think the suggestion of going on the Bupa website is a good one. You might also find that some shrinks are willing to do a free consultation where you can explain what you're hoping to get out of seeing them.

To be honest, they are all the same and the meds they prescribe are the same. To a degree....

I am getting an NHS med review and have asked about ECT. AND I have LSD. I have taken it before. This is the most excited I have been about anything in years....

So I guess I'm going back to psych ward quick ;)

Thanks everyone for kind responses.

Recommending individuals - that's why I said by PM. I would like to know of a psychiatrist that actuallly listens when they diagnose and discusses medication options. But the reality is I'm pretty out of options.

I paid £400 (maybe more, I can't remember) for an appointment at the Priory a few years ago. Doubtless it would cost more now. I left with a prescription for a beta blocker. Pointless.

I used to have an excellent psychiatrist though but he is sadly now retired. It may be worth looking to see if any of the universities are running trials and get in touch directly with the lead researcher (this is what I did, years ago, and ended up with excellent help for my mental health condition with said psychiatrist). Maybe look on the Royal College of Psychiatry website and in the medical schools for Imperial, UCL, Kings and even further afield.

Also, to be fair, I have just moved areas in the UK and am under a decent mental health team here. I'm basically flabbergasted at the difference to where I was living before (where I was told, "Well, we can't do anything as there are no psychiatrists in the entire county." !!!!!!) The psychiatrist was excellent (ie actually listened to me and didn't patronise or seem impatient with me - which is the more usual experience if you are lucky enough - from my experience - to get to see an NHS psychiatrist).

Good luck. Mental ill health is a difficult path to have to tread.

Wow! That is unusual! hahahaha

I am nicely stoned for the relief of the whole day which is why I can laugh. Happy to hear there is a decent team out there

and agreed. This is not a fun path.
