ive been maladaptive daydreaming to escape from my reality and not face my problems. Its a serious addiction for me, as im approaching my 20s and leaving behind my teenage years, i want to stop spending hours and hours daydreaming and wasting my time and im trying to live in the present.
has anyone recovered from this without getting professional help? i could use some advice.

I did this for close to 15 years. I think you might just have to face the problem you're trying to escape. Maybe that's not possible for you? I don't know what your problem is. All I can say is that's what worked for me.

The problem I was trying to escape from was myself. I won't get into my whole life story, but basically I hated almost everything about myself for the longest time. So I started changing some things. It's still a work in progress, will probably never be complete, but when I started hating myself less, I stopped escaping to my fantasies as often, and eventually stopped completely. This didn't solve everything, obviously. I'm still here after all lol. I use other forms of escapism for other problems. But the maladaptive daydreaming was specific to wanting to get away from me as a person, and I stopped that by facing the fact that I didn't like certain things about myself and making changes.

I don't know if that's helpful. That's all I got.

I think it's called chunibyou syndrome?

Everyone does it. But I think grows out of it mostly after school.
I'm in my 40s and I still do it. But I don't do it for a huge amounts of time though. Maybe a half hour in total over the course of a day.
