• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

I submitted two of my law assignments today and my university uses an AI tool called turnitin to detect for potential plagiarism. When submitted it gives a score of similarity the higher the score the likely lecturers will suspect plagiarism.

Turnitin is so messed up it flags up sentences other people wrote. For example I wrote the court in one of my essays and it flags up in red against another student at a different university.

My turnitin scoree is 26% for one of law my assignments. I don't understand everything is referenced. I have referenced every academic and judgement.

I have checked everything over and over again to see if it's cited accurately.

I am enormously stressed about this because it is my own work. I have worked so hard to put so much detail into this. This has caused me enormous distress.

I read online 26% is a bad score to have on Turtin. I have accurately cited everything accurately.

I have been not sleeping so i feel even more anxious over the score. I am scared the university is going to accuse me of Plagiarism, I am distressed beyond belief

I submitted my assignments today because I had 2 assignments with double deadlines and they were both heavy. I am absolutely terrified

First off, make sure you have all of your rough drafts and any outlines you used prior to better argue that you didn't plagiarize.

Secondly, you can also try calling out the fact that questions about Turnitin's accuracy have been an issue for a while now.

Thirdly, most institutions allow a certain percentage of plagiarism in papers. With that in mind, you should also try seeing what percentage of plagiarism is specifically allowed by your school to see if you even have anything you worry about.

And finally, it's likely that your prof will review the paper themselves before taking any action. So long as everything is properly cited they likely aren't going to do shit to you. Turnitin looks for similarities, not actual plagiarism. From what I've heard, it's common for students with similar Turnitin scores to yours to turn in their work and have it result in nothing because they properly cited everything.

I agree with the other writer, please have your rough drafts saved, it will definitely help. If you truly did your own work then you are fine. If you say this is true and yours, then I believe you. If that score number is bad then there will be a meeting and you're definitely invited. You have a chance to say how you wrote the paper and if and what resources you used. That is the most help is having that info ready. They will then take all that info into consideration and make a decision.
My friend in college used one of those sites that write papers for you. They called her for a meeting and asked about her paper. What saved her is she had a rough draft and said she had someone edit her paper. We were near graduation, so they told her don't do that anymore and just edit your papers yourself. That was all that happened.
It's not over unless they say it's over. I know how stressful this can be. You spend all night search and Google get the what if's
I can only say try to calm down. If you know you didn't cheat then they need to prove that you did. If they think the have enough evidence they will call you for a meeting. If you don't get a call, leave this issue alone. Don't ask for follow ups, just keep going. Don't even tell your friends.

I truly hope everything works out for you. Please keep us posted. I personally think you will be fine. 26% is not that much, it's not even half.

If you are citing things and coping words exactly from a citation, then that's not plagiarism.

It's normal for things like that to detect plagiarism when there is no plagiarism.

Unless there is some threshold at which plagiarism accusations start or unless you've never heard another student get a 26, then you have nothing to worry about. Get some sleep. If they accuse you of plagiarism this can be a fun fight for you to be litigious and win.

@EvisceratedJester My university doesn't have a threshold for turnitin but lectuers do get suspicious over certian numbers. It varies from lecturer to lecturer which makes its scary.

One lecturer says he gets suspicious if the score is in the 30% ranges.

Turnitin even flags up common legal terms. I wrote a paper explaining a law and the system was flagging up in red the words court, legislation, judges.

I really don't like Turnitin it makes me feel like a criminal for submitting work. I feel like my work is on trial and AI is the judge and jury.

@needthebus I cite everything accurately and honest about where all my sources came from.

I don't like turnitin it evens flags up common legal words other people use. Turnitin is terrible for law because law students are all citing the same rules now the AI is judging us against it.

What I mean is a plagiarism threshold, not a threshold for Turnitin.

Your score also isn't in the 30 percent range, so you should probably be fine when it comes to that prof.

For now, if I were you, I would just try to gather up my rough drafts and relax. It's unlikely that this will amount to anything.

@EvisceratedJester Honestly 1 thing I don't enjoy about essay writing is the fear of being accused of plagiarism. I had a very close friend in my law class in undergrad and she almost didn't graduate 3rd year because of plagiarism.

Her case was accidental plagiarism and she was a hard working girl who made a mistake and forgot to cite. Seeing what she went through actually terrified me of ever being in that situation.

I dont like turnitin the AI tool scares me so much. I cite all my sources but I always have that fear. I never feel at peace when submitting assignments until I get my grades.

then just recognize this as an irrational worry and intrusive thought, the chances of it impacting you are prpbably 1/1000000 and youll be fine, realitically there is zero chance this will impact you

you seem like an ethical and careful person. you'll be alright
