Our universe was established via random chance. No purpose or intent behind events. Just purely laws, particles and molecules interacting with each other.
Then by chance of molecules combining, life came into existence. It evolved at pure random, relying on mutations and outside factors. These organisms evolved to have a survival instinct to keep themselves intact and living for as long as possible. And when these actors found themselves surrounded by other actors and various parts of the stage (environment), on that scale, meaning was created. With meaning, with those close interactions, consciousness began to arise.
But free will is not a scientifically proven thing. Neuroscientists theorize that rather than one consciousness, we have multiple that are not aware of each other. And I theorize that these consciousnesses were formed particularly because of the close interactions with other material and organisms on our scale. To take in information and find a meaning to it.
However, the universe does not function on eternal and unwavering meanings. It functions on randomness, or disorder. So when an organism— with a consciousness that evolved in an environment in which meaning was supposed to be found— finds no fixed meanings because the universe does not function that way the organism becomes distressed. On the scale of the Earth, we can find common meanings and facts in terms of our sizable interactions. But philosophical and moral meanings hold no objective truths. Our consciousness is incompatible with our universe.
Intelligence is an important role in consciousness. The more you observe, the more patterns you find, the more facts you can discover and prove.. until you get to the scale that most of us are at. Complex and beyond us. Having a certain amount of knowledge can increase our consciousness making us more aware of our incompatibility with the universe. This is why higher intelligence is correlated with being depressed or other mental illness.
Essentially, mental illness is going past the basic fundamentals of evolution: to live enough to reproduce, to keeping your body alive and intact for as long as possible, to imagine yourself having a purpose. It is realizing that beyond our scale, there are no set meanings.
So we are comfortable with our purpose to be reproducing as long as we are simple. But we started to live longer. We started to be able to observe more which lead to increased consciousness and intelligence.
On our society's scale in terms of pro-life, many people are focused on deluding themselves to keep finding meaning and purpose. It's why humanity is invaded with different ideologies. But when others experience enough random events that are stress inducing, when they experience enough exploitation and suffering, they move on from the society and desperately try to find new meanings. But they struggle because it is impossible to go against majority as it makes up our entire environment. And when they allude to going against what society says, it labels them as mentally ill. This is alienation between ourselves and our society. And broadly, this is alienation between our biology and the universe.
