Given the official Ofcom investion into the site, I wanted to express a few things.
I'd hope that as much as a 15 minute visit here would be enough to see that this community isn't about bullying people into suicide or coercing them to do something they aren't sure about themselves. The community here is about expressing and respecting choice.
It still obviously leaves the availability of method information to address. While this won't exactly stop or nullify the investigation, I'm hoping that it will put it into perspective. I was hoping we could all share some stories on other ways we learnt about suicide methods- obviously without putting them at risk also.
I imagine I may be right in suggesting a large number of members here already knew quite a bit about viable suicide methods before they joined this site. Personally, I already knew about inert gas and SN before joining. Two methods I would much more likely choose.
The New York Times article first put me on to SN and, this site. The same can be said for the BBC, the YouTuber Tantacrul for a lot of members here. Further than that, members here have said the trail of breadcrumbs the BBC left to work out what DMC was was in fact- far more obvious than any clues they got here! (The irony.)
I learnt a lot about SN via published online police reports! They sometimes even photograph what people have used in terms of antiemetics and written instructions. I'm actually pretty amazed these major organizations are so careless! I'd argue that more censorship is taken on this forum to not openly reveal sources.
I suppose, out of curiosity, I'd like to ask: How much did you know about suicide methods before joining the site? If the site didn't exist, do you think you'd still be able to find the information out there? I imagine I still would. Given that the PPH will likely always be around in some form and that, a lot of methods are covered in that- I suspect the information will always be out there in some form. Exit International may try to restrict access to the PPH but- it's pretty hard to stop information leaking out in this day and age.
I'd also like to suggest that- the moment a suicide is reported on in the media- all those considering suicide ears will prick up. I find it really odd that perhaps the normies think those considering suicide are perhaps too depressed or not with it to be able to research. Plenty of suicidal people become very tenacious in achieving their goal. Ironically, the more publicity the site gets, the more members it attracts, the more very unhappy people become aware of things like SN. Ironically, these organizations most likely shoot themselves in the foot when they come after this place. You're simply advertising it to a whole lot more people!
Not that it will stop anything but, I just wanted to express my thoughts. Do you have any experiences you wanted to share?
