  • Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

As the title of the threat already says, I have stopped taking my Mirtazapin over a week ago now. And now my insomnia is returning..
I had been prescribed with it half a year ago because of bad insomnia with a severe depressive episode.
At the time I had problems with my apetite as well, so, I barely ate anything.
Now that I have taken the pills for six months, I have slept pretty good mostly, but I have also gained a lot of weight. So much, that I feel that I am very close to being pushed back into an eating disorder. I had one years ago, so I know how easy it is to fall back into that habit. The doctor I had told about the fact of how much this constant hunger is bugging me, had just told me to ignore it ... geez, thanks for that shitty adivce.
Has anyone experience with Mirtazapin? Or knowledge of an antidepressant which has soothing properties which help to fall asleep, but do not increase hunger as a side effect?
I really do not want to have to take Mirtazapin again. I can deal with a few nights of bad sleep, but I work a full time job in addition to writing my PhD thesis, so I need some sleep or I will collapse in a few days, weeks maximum ...
Does anyone have any advice?

I don't know whether or not it helps you/is safe for you - but in the past weed has helped me sleep.

I've also heard of Amitryptiline, but I thikn it also has weight gain issues.

Agomelatine is meant to be very very good for sleep and not cause weight gain as much as eg SSRIs. I have heard some great reviews, but the rare side effects are quite nasty. Maybe that's true of all medication, but the stuff on Agomelatine sounds even more nasty to my untrained eye. Here is some ratings - you can look under weight gain for the weight gain aspect - maybe 60% had no change: https://www.rateadrug.com/Agomelatine-side-effects.aspx

Weed is sadly out for me. Not legal where I live and the last thing I need right now is legal complications as well.

I will ask my doctor about Agomelatine, no idea if it is prescribed here or not at all.
Thanks for the reply though (:

Hi gentleflower. I'm actually in the same position as you as I stopped taking mirtazapine 2 weeks ago. I've really been really struggling with appetite(lost a lot of weight already and look/feel like shit). Sleep has been ok so far but i'm a cannabis smoker and I see that's not an option for you.
Unfortunately for me it's not legal where I live and for various reasons i'm going to be without it for at least a couple of weeks and I know I won't be sleeping at all sober. I don't like doing it, but I got a prescription for zopiclone (sleeping pill not anti depressant) which has helped me out before, to get me through the withdrawal. I take it once every 3 nights just to stop me going completely nuts. It doesn't make me want to eat more.
Other than the usual stuff of avoiding caffeine etc from my experience there isn't really much you can do other than wait it out.
This is my second time coming off mirtazapine, the first time I was on 45mg for 9 years but fortunately I've only been on 15mg for 7/8 months this time.
And also I've got a lot of respect for you doing this whilst working and studying. There's no chance I'd put myself through this with that much pressure on me.
All the best and I hope that things work out for you. Feel free to send me a pm if you want to chat about anything

Hi again, Agomelatine not available in USA.

I just started Selegiline (5mg) and it is working on day 1. I hope it lasts. There are some great reviews out there - I don't knwo how it is for insomnia though, but for deression great, and I believe no weight issues. Here are the reviews:
