• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

I always wondered about the US approach. In US TV nudity sucha an issue. The scandal of Janett Jackson and the Superbowl is such a joke. Also that swearing is censored this heavily. Who cares? Children will hear those words anyway by their parents.
In Germany you can se boobs on TV on air at any time of the day. There are movies rated for kids up the age of 6 that show nudity.
As a teenager I watched the uncensored version of Fantastic Movie (Which shows a completely nude woman) at the afternoon at one big TV station. (I think it was a violation of the laws but not punished I think the scene should only be aired after 10 p.m. actually. But there was no punishment.)

I think the European approach makes way more sense. There are The Walking Dead episodes which are so brutal that they had to be censored to get access to the German market. Personally, I think this is one step too much . Considering the fact that real life gore is that easily available on the internet I think such a step is a joke.

I read though that in the US explicit violence is way more accepted on TV which does not make sense to me.

I go with violence. I watched gore before I watched porn.

I think they are ok, or not harmful if they are just movies. I have lived in the USA and I understand it's mainly a pretty strict policy for that.

Nudity isn't sth strange it's how we humans naturally look - nudity is only a problem in society and mainly a problem bc of religious believes. Sex is also sth natural but also here religious believes have a lot of influence in society how society sees sex.

However, hardcore, porn and sth like that is sth else.

What do you define as "violence"? War? Abuse?

I've voted for violence.

Can only speak for myself but sex/pornography has definitely affected me worse than violent imagery ever did.
I think everyone is different in their reactions though, depends on the person.

violence, sex and nudity arent bad things, theyre natural and something children will learn about once theyre older regardless (not campaigning for showing kids pornography just its the lesser of two evils) whereas violence can be traumatic for anyone and is generally something everyone avoids being exposed to if possible

I get way more repulsed by violent images than sexual ones but as a child I also went out of my way to avoid those things and instead chose to seek out nudity and sexual content whenever I felt like it. I wasn't really exposed to either until I was maybe 10 or 11 years old though so I'm not sure which is worse to show smaller kids. I guess it just depends. Or maybe they both are equally harmful just in distinct ways.

Personally, I define by it for example gun violence you see in movies. Or things you see in The Walkind Dead a lot of blood, cut of body parts etc.

I would say this can be even disturbing after a certain minimum age.

I think nudity better left censored. There are plenty of people, not just children, who would not be appreciative of suddenly seeing unexpected nudity. Its not neccessarily that its bad, but I think a lot of people would not want to see it in "polite society".

Plenty of children see violence in US media, and censoring it off tv would be near impossible. Managing what young children are exposed to is the responsibility of the parent, and I don't think older children (10+ year olds) are too affected by violence as a plot point. Someone getting shot or blown up in a giant explosion isn't really all that gory, and that accounts for the majority of violence, imo. I'll go out there for all the people who aren't answering to say that I, having experienced a somewhat normal childhood, saw people getting shot on tv when I was 10, and a lot of people here probably did too.

I guess it comes down to if you'd rather your child see someone get shot in a movie or see full nudity. If I had a young child I would be much more comfortable with the first than the second. Guns as a concept is something that every child, I'm sure in europe as well, have a decent concept of. They probably (hopefully) haven't been exposed to nudity though, which could be incredibly damaging.

Nudity at the beach for example? I mean "nudity" is the most natural thing for all living beings.

I don't think I've ever seen nudity at the beach lol
Some countries have designated areas at beaches (or even public indoor pools) where people can be naked if they want to. It's not an unusual thing.

Maybe someone can correct me but I don't think that exists anywhere in north or south america.. I think it would violate public decency laws in the US. Is it a european thing?

The interesting thing to me is that you say "in media," so I'm not counting porn/horrid online violent rl videos.

I still think it leans towards sex, because of what kids are taught about dating life. Most very violent things are restricted by rating, so if kids see something horrible I blame their parents more than the media itself. Also, the person committing violence is usually portrayed as the bad guy unless they're defending someone.

I'm going to take a different approach than nudity being scarring. I don't think boys are ruined for seeing tiddies.

My issues with sex have to do with its portrayal even in stuff that is not so restricted, like things teenagers would be watching. Sitcoms, dramas, etc

First, there's the "soulmate" "The One (TM)" lie that you have to find some magic romance to be happy. It feeds obsession and limerance, which I've had a good bit in the past, fixating on one potential partner who you think could solve everything. The truth is that relationships are about building something together and you don't have to be absolutely 100% perfectly matched initially to succeed.

The second thing is the casual portrayal of sex. It seems like people are having sex with a new person every couple of days and that is absolutely normal! Beyond discussion of the damages of promiscuity, this sets an unrealistic expectation. It tells you people should be jumping your bones left and right. Then, you think, if that isn't happening, there most be something wrong with me. Now, combine this with the first issue. Suddenly you're longing for that one person but also lacking any confidence whatsoever. I think this adds to a lot of the dating world problems we see these days, and in conjunction the loneliness epidemic.
