• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

A real work of art. One of, if not my favorite, games of all time. Link to the steam page for Rain World.

Saw another thread by a user named "Namelesa" on this wonderful video game a week or so ago, but that thread got deleted because it was in the Suicide Discussion forum instead of offtopic, so I'm making this thread again in the hopes of them commenting on it. I really love the game and would love to discuss it with them, hopefully. If anyone knows them, please shoot them a private message if you can to let them know I would love to talk about it. Whoever's reading this, I wish you well.

As for any other readers of this thread: about Rain World.

Players assume control of a "slugcat", an elongated felid-like rodent, and are tasked with survival in a derelict and hostile world.

The game features a simulated ecosystem. The slugcat uses debris as weapons to escape predators, scavenges for food, and tries to reach safe hibernation rooms before the deadly torrential rain arrives. The game's developers intended to give players little explicit guidance on how to survive so that they would feel like "A rat living on subway tracks," learning to survive in an environment without understanding its higher-level function.

Wikipedia

Fascinating video game, a real special experience of survival and exploration, that is engaging without compromising it's artistic vision.

I highly recommend anyone who's alright with indie games, and with exploration-style platformers, to give it a shot. It's wonderful, really, for anyone who's willing to get through it. It's rough sometimes, but it's beautiful and fascinating enough to make it all worth it.

And the lore is quite minimalist, yet profound as well.

In the game, you find colored pearls scattered throughout the world; which, like many things in the game, appear obscure at first, but have some higher purpose originally intended in mind.

If you're too curious and feel like you'd read the lore before playing--I would see this wiki page. (Pearl Dialogue, Rain World Wiki). I can't stress enough how much I recommend playing the game completely blind first, and experiencing it all the way to the end first, but this lore wiki page is there for those who are curious about it! Feel free to check it out if you're curious. I hope you like it.

I just deleted it myself cus I just got paranoid about it. I didn't know whether to put in Suicide discussion or here since it did mention the want to die cus a lot of the characters in Rain World want to find a way to die forever cus when they do die they just wake up from where they last slept and that they want to find a way out of their suffering. I just love the game so much for that reason cus I just feel like my views of suicide and life are seen by this game.

I think there is definitely a very interesting place for those themes in the tone of the world. There's much that is profoundly ambiguous, as if you can see edges of a gateway to infinity, but not all the way through the sky. It's hard to explain, but, something like that.

It really does consummate the "rat in a subway tunnel" concept. Another creature on the forest floor gnawing at the boundless infinites of the void.

Slugcat's quite privileged compared to other dafter creatures when it comes to knowing the ultimate truth of it's world. But next to the top-level consciousnesses and their experiments? Slugcat is left immersed in the confusion that soaks Rain World. And that, pun was not intended :pfff:

I want to add about how at least for 2 of the slugcats its objectively better for them to die forever as if they would have to deal with endless suffering, These slugcats being Hunter and Artificer.

Hunter Spoilers:
Hunter has a terminal illness called the rot which will weaken them and cause them to suffer more after some time. If you die when the illness gets worse Hunter will have to suffer endless deaths cus of it. Its preferable then to ascend as to be able to escape this fate.

Artificer Spoilers:
She is a mother who has lost her children to another species called scavengers and is in constant grief and rage due to her loss which causes her to wants to commit genocide on them. If you decide to kill the Chieftain Scavenger, her karma will become locked at 1 which will mean she will never be able to ascend and is forever stuck grieving her children and taking revenge on the scavengers. If you try to increase her karma and try to ascend it doesn't work properly but she is able to see her children one last time and be able to move past to whats happened to her (as the ending name is "Acceptance".) I don't think she turns into an echo as her ending looks too different from Saint's so I think she just no longer exists and doesn't become a void worm if we assume ascension cause you to become a void worm. You also can't reload your save compared to other Ascension endings so that might say something. I would say this ending is better for her as she no longer as to suffer from her loss and grief of her children.

I would say the other slugcats' non Ascension endings could be considered better depending on the person and if you think life is still worth living in despite the suffering in the world.
