  • Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Resource/Help
It's help for me, resource for others who might be looking for it.

I have my doubts but it doesn't seem like there would be any harm in asking.
Does anyone know a site that's sort of like this but more towards the recovery side of things? I have the suicide section blocked but it's still in the side bar and it kinda spills over into here and the off topic section a bit. But NOT prolife. I'm looking for something that can help me but when I'm down pick me back up. I get that here and here is basically what I'm looking for but it's like I said the suicide stuff I find kinda spills over a bit.

I don't know how going about making one would work, but could that be a possibility? like a sister site you can maybe work out with the mods?

Maybe. Then it would be exactly the site in looking for because I made it but I'd also be the only one there for a while lol

I've been thinking along similar lines. There's always Suicide Forum, but to be blunt, I have problems taking that forum seriously.

What do you mean? Do you mean a recovery site/forum where suicide talk is allowed?

I think most normal recovery sites are very pro-life for a reason. Many people on recovery forums have mild cases, or have managed to fully manage/recover from their illness. It's not productive for those types of people to be pro-choice, and it's fair if they don't want to foster an environment where it's condoned and advice is passed around. It's paradoxical and unproductive for people who are serious about recovery to think this way.

But usually mental illness forums and sites dont ban you just for saying you wanna kill yourself. Of course they draw the line at saying pro-choice stuff and giving people advice on methods, thats normal. But otherwise you're pretty much free to talk about suicidal ideation and stuff. Most of the social anxiety recovery forums I browse have way more posts about the suffering SAD causes and suicidal posting than actual recovery stuff. The suicidal posts will always have some helpline links and the obligatory "sUicIDe iS a pErMaNeNt soLuTiOn to A tEmPoRaRy prObLeM!" post, but they're easy to ignore.

No. I'm talking about a place where you... I don't want to only say talk about recovery but a place where you talk about different medications or therapies that are helping. Or if you're having a bad day you can talk about it and the other members can help and give advice based off personal experience or knowledge. And if you do decided that healing isn't for you, or you're just not quite ready then you have the option to leave. Like the recovery section here with a bit less suicide. (it's a little difficult to explain but I hope that helped) a place you can go if you're really serious about recovery but not so pro-life where you have the option to leave and come back to a place like this site.
;) I'd join you even if it's just the two of us talking

Maybe a left-field suggestion, but outofthefog.net might be a good ressource/ community for that.

Most communities will unfortunately (or not) be "pro-life", unless you find some group of very free thinking folks. In some more philosophical circles I have found suicide to not be as taboo as amongst the general public.

I didn't get a good look at it but I looked at it a little bit. It's got the right idea but seems specifically for dealing with personality disorders and relationships when you have one. I'll look at it though. Maybe there some stuff there that can help my loved ones understand. :) so something good came out of the suggestion lol thanks

I looked into this one too and I totally see what you mean. And the general layout of the site is EVERYWHERE it seemed.

You are going to be hard pressed finding somewhere as open as this. This site takes risks in allowing radical acceptance of pro choice thought. There is one forum that is pretty solid and I can recommend, but you still cannot discuss methods and people there will likely encourage you towards recovery, distracting in the present or will just acknowledge the pain you are in and commiserate. The reason I can recommend it is moderators there are vetted through formal channels. Assholes don't last long. Before I plunged into the need to self exit it was a comfortable and comforting place to be with ample kindness on display. They also have specific section on medication.

That site can go fuck itself with dildo wrapped in razor wire and no lube, I don't say that lightly. Its authoritarian to the extreme. The rules look like only Stalin could make them any worse. If you like being patronised, talked down to like only the moderators are the only adults on the planet, then sure go there and be sure to smile lots of emoji smiles and forced positivity. I got in trouble on there for talking about depressive realism. Told I was romanticising depression. I asked if they read the study I linked. Infraction points and thread locked. I also personally know of people damaged by that site, some of whom made attempts on their lives after being frozen out from contacting their friends on there. They were given zero leeway. Because they got in trouble for being surprise surprise mentally ill, running afoul of the rules that I am sure even my guinea pigs could violate.

That's what I'm looking for. Not necassarly to get away from the suicide because I don't like taking options away from myself unless I'm 100% sure, but a place I can go to distance myself from it when need be.

I like the idea and I'm of the same mind. I would value a recovery orientated forum but open minded enough to value pro choice.
However i echo the sentiment that you'll be hard pressed to find acceptance of pro choice talk, even if you do want to recover.
I visited the Suicide Forum, but I saw repeated canned, over effusive responses to plaintive cries for help which I found to be insulting. At least have the decency to listen and respond to specifics not a blanket cut and paste.

oh i figured that i just didnt think it would kill to ask. be ironic if it did though lol.
idk if enough of us like the idea maybe we can do what @so tired or manic suggested about asking the admins to make a sister site or something. would it be a problem if i made a poll to see what people think without asking admin?

I don't know :notsure:
The admins do put a lot of work into this place. We may not see it all, but they really do, including watching out for people. They just do it quietly. Doubling the voluntary workload...:O

well its kinda my idea so maybe i could be one of the mods and id probably spend a lot of my time there. that would be some extra help. plus the rules would be really clear so theres no arguing with them. like no negative stuff. (ok that "example" isnt a very good one but i didnt have a good day so im kinda high now and thats the best i currently have lol)

I visited that site, and read though it. It's your garden-variety pro-life site, nothing special about it. We know better than to try getting any use out of it. But someone who's "not really" suicidal---like a teenager being bullied or something---might get some benefit from it.

I was surprised and slightly unnerved that it has a similar user interface and layout as our site. (Does the same company own them?) The color scheme was different, though: brighter and higher-contrast. But a colorblind person (specifically deuteranope or monochromatic) would see them as nearly identical, minus the thread list.

I've noticed there's an abundance of rules, but I didn't know it's that bad.

I know of members who frequent both sites actually. To each there own, I guess.

The problem with starting a sister site, even with the blessing if this site's admins, is that it takes a ton of effort to moderate and run it. I don't think they'd be interested in running a second site, which means you'd have to do all the work yourself. You could of course look for others to help you, but how do you find people who are trustworthy and willing to put a lot of effort into it?

Not to mention the technical side, server costs and management etc. A small forum is not that hard to set up, but with a topic like recovery, you'd end up with a very stale and repetitive feeling until you have enough people to provide some diversity in the discussions.

I can sometimed feel even here at this recovery section that it's mostly the same few people who are active. Doesn't have to be a bad thing, but it was something that put me off when I first joined this site. Once you've discussed a topic for a little while, you run out if things to say if no one brings a new perspective.

Sorry for being so pessimistic. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I want to give you more realistic expectations. That way you can make an informed decision and not end up too disappointed if it ends up not working out.

I was just worried you would be hurt if you tried and couldn't make it as great as you had hoped. I still also like the idea, even if I think it's unrealistic.

It's a difficult one. Almost any site is fine for recovery resources but if it's more of an interactive thing you want you may struggle to find places where people are not going to clash with your mindset.
