• Hey Guest,

An update on the OFCOM situation: As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. OFCOM, the UK’s communications regulator, has singled out our community, demanding compliance with their Online Safety Act despite our minimal UK presence. This is a blatant overreach, and they have been sending letters pressuring us to comply with their censorship agenda.

Our platform is already blocked by many UK ISPs, yet they continue their attempts to stifle free speech. Standing up to this kind of regulatory overreach requires lots of resources to maintain our infrastructure and fight back against these unjust demands. If you value our community and want to support us during this time, we would greatly appreciate any and all donations.

This is something I have known for a while, debating is not helpful at all because what ends up happening is the person who's good at debating wins, they don't have to have better ideas they just need to be quicker at thinking and good at villifying their opponent. That's one of the reasons politics never works, the people that win are the people who can convince others that they have good intentions. In reality it is always con men and psychopaths that end up looking good in debates. So I just don't support any kind of debate, it's a horrible way of discussing ideas and can be very dangerous if you're debating someone who can make you look bad.

People should be able to discuss freely though. No side is ever perfect and getting caught up in one extreme or the other is the real problem. If your side doesn't allow any other views than their own then it's a cult

Having been on this website for a while and been on the receiving end of numerous HEY DEBATE ME FUCKO messages from some of the dullest motherfuckers who ever did breathe i can state with confidence that this is categorically inaccurate, it's amazing how many utter thickos think they are smarter than they are just because they can spell and much of what is presently considered to be "debate" is ultimately borefare, wherein one very tragic person presents an impermeable wall of text like a force nine gale of self-important halitosis and the other party simply gives up on responding because they have better things to do

Okay, but you can freely discuss other views without there needing to be any debating involved. Debating is something that relies more on spectacle rather than always being a true reflection of the qualities of one's views. You can debate in favour of something that is completely wrong in every way possible and still come out on top.

I don't watch them too much either, though from the bits I have seen they don't feel they are productive, tbh. I've heard that the more recent ones that have going on in the US have supposedly just been a complete mess.

Well you're right but not for the right reasons. Debates I think are supposed to be used to get down to some kind of truth but I think most of the time they're just used to make people think that their position is right. Which is useful for reinforcing a preexisting belief but worthless for the truth. Though for both functions there's better methods to get the same results. Debate is more like a tool so on its own it can't hold much weight if any.

This is what I've noticed too tbh. Debating is definitely contingent at being a quicker thinker and sounding smart. Another reason why I think it's pointless to debate with most people can be summarised by the following quote that I will paraphrase: "winning a debate against a smart person is difficult whereas winning a debate against a stupid person is impossible". It really is impossible to win a debate against stupid people and it's why I unfortunately think that it's hopeless to try and win a debate against pro lifers as they are so stuck up in their beliefs to where they fail to acknowledge the other side. It's just- fuck, being in this world is so exhausting

The most frightening and dangerous example of this I feel is in law/ court. It really scares me that guilty people sometimes very likely get off because they could afford defence attourneys that had a whole lot of wit and a commanding and confident presence that swayed a jury. Or conversely that an innocent person is sent down by a prosecutor that is terribly convincing.

I'm not sure how else to do it of course. Especially when there isn't strong evidence. Still- it isn't a level playing field in terms of the varying abilities of lawyers so- surely that means that the scales of justice themselves aren't actually balanced or fair.

I wonder what would happen if both sides were 'played' by AI. An impartial being that was given all the available evidence to present both sides. I wonder if that will ever happen.
