High enough places (>40m) are not that easy to come by and overcoming SI is a bitch, also if you jump from too low and get rescued there's a good chance you'll live but remain crippled.
I would make sure to jump from high enough... I wonder where I could go...

it's not an aesthetic view if you see somebody lying there, but I can understand you, I couldn't do hanging myself. Go at least 50 meters high, best is beton or something similar under you. If you crash with your head damage is largest. There is a little chance that you survive, depends mostly on how you hit the ground. Don't lend on your feet! Don't jump from low heigh!! That could turn into a nightmare even worse than your actual life.
Watch out, bridges often have nets to prevent jumping. If you can take a camera with you pretending making pictures of a "good view".
But please have in mind that this method is final and there is no turning back if you do the step. So you should be really really sure, if it's the last solution for you.

Broken bones, internal damage, traumatic brain injury, paralysis, brain damage, you could end up in a vegetative state.
Jumping is risky. As said before, make sure you know this is definitely what you want if it's how you're going to go.

Tall enough buildings that are open to the public and don't have people walking around below that you could fall on and kill are quite rare, especially outside of North America. Bridges are hit and miss 'cause they might have tall fences or nets underneath to prevent people from jumping. You could try a cliff if you live near the mountains, but even then sheer drops are less common than you might think...
I don't know, go out and explore, that's the only advice I can give.
I'm in North America...
Every time I go through my options like this I always come to realize it just has to be hanging...

I researched jumping a lot. Thought I could do it too. Off a not too tall parking garage bc several ppl died off of it... getting up there several times and looking down was horrific. I don't know how they got the courage. A lot of ppl jump, I had about every news article memorized. I had it in my head I would. But now I'm glad I didn't. There's so many complications if you survive it, but that goes with every method I guess. :/ sigh.

Is there a way of preventing yourself from landing on your feet and instead your head hitting first? I'm afraid some survival instinct would come into play and my body would try to land on my feet.

The impact may not kill you instantly and some Good Samaritan passing by will cause you to awaken in a hospital with a permanently damaged body.

you know the others say how you could end up paralyzed and stuff but I am just going to say this.When the time comes when you truly want it you will just do it with whatever method works. Doesn't matter if its a knife, N or jumping off a building.
There's a risk with every method. If the pain truly outweighs the happiness you will accept the risk. You won't even hesitate.
A friend of mine once said that when you're truly ready, everything will be better than the current state. Even if it is likely to end up as a vegetable. It's at that point when being paralyzed or dead is better than the current life you're living that you decide in your heart to do it. I know it sounds horrible but someday you'll understand.

Where ever you decide to jump, make sure it is higher than 100 meters above ground or 200 meters above water.
I wouldn't risk it, especially if jumping from low.
A lot of luck was involved but air stewardess Vesna Vulovic survived a 10km fall softened by snow, after the plane she was on tore apart.
8 inches might not make a real difference to success but could be the difference between dying when you hit the ground vs dying 3 hours later in the hospital
I've heard of people practicing at the diving board of their local pool.
A course on bungee jumping will give you a good feel for it :-)

The risks include breaking your bones, damaging your organs badly enough that you become crippled with permanent damage/injuries, and of course, the worst of all, spinal cord injuries from damaging your spine/neck. Being paralyzed or being a vegetable is a fate worse than death itself as that entails being nearly fully dependent on others to do day to day things that the average able-bodied person takes for granted. I would much rather die than be a paraplegic or worst a quadriplegic.

At @HelensNepenthe there really is no way to guarantee how you will hit the ground, sub 100ft you just go with gravity, above that you can flip around & land any which way.
Yes you can die falling off a ladder, but there was also a bloke who tried to kill his wife by buggering her cute when she went skydiving, fell from 2000+ft and has less injuries than i did.
The short answer is yes it can kill you, but like everything else it is not a given & if you are going to fail then i suggest a method that won't guarantee a lifetime of crippling pain afterwards.

What are the risks of jumping? Depends on the context. I mean if you are in a rowing boat the main risk is capsizing :)
