What are your favorite books?

I love Harry Potter too. My other favorite book series is Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire. Other favorite books of mine are Juliet takes a breath, Radio Silence, Jane Eyre, Desayuno en Jupiter (I think this one isn't translated), When the moon was ours, Happiness like water, etc. Sorry I just love books, probably one of the few things I still like.

No joke, Lord of the Flies is my favorite book. There's nothing that comes close. Like everybody else, I also like a Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter. On the whole, I'm not much of a fiction reader. Most of the books I read are on politics, science, history.

In The Heart Of The Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick is the most amazing book I've read this past year. Its about the sinking of a whale ship by a sperm whale in 1820 and the tales of their journey from Nantucket and ultimately how the men survive being stranded in the Pacific ocean thousands of miles from land with little provisions and little hope.

I liked his use of language. It was descriptive and rich and a bit romantic. I guess I'm a sucker for a little poeticism from time to time. Funny, I thought I'd be more judged for reading a socialist book lol. Good times.

No, but I have started reading "Conspiracy Against the Human Race" by Thomas Ligotti. Sounds like that'd be up your alley. Nihilisa Frank quotes him a lot.

Oh no, lol, that's my bag. Definitely not judging you for the socialism. As for the Alchemist, the prose might have been a sticking point for me. I tend to prefer short, sweet, and to the point - hence LotF. LotR, on the other hand, ugh......I know I might get some hate for this, but they have to be the most overrated books ever. Great concept, great world, poor execution. Fuck you, Tolkien, if you think I'm going to read 20 pages about some mystical fucking meadow.

The Malazan series by Steven Erikson. Fantasy, but very different. You'll either love it or hate it. If you love it, it will take over your life. The second book actually made me cry.

Random high-concept stuff. Here's a list of the main things I can remember:

1. The Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud (still one of the best fantasy fiction pieces I've read).
2. The Silmarillion, by J.R.R Tolkien (LotR was good, this was great).
   
3. Spice and Wolf, by Isuna Hasekura (Fantasy fiction based on economics was where I decided I was on board).
4. Saki's short stories (I've picked up the habit of saying that I remember that Editha Clubberly was born on the 12th of October).
5. The Man Who Would Be King, by Kipling (My favorite of his stories).
6. White Fang, by Jack London (A great extended episodic look at the life of a domesticated wolf).
7. Extensions of Lovecraft's work, like Ane Naru Mono (which I like for contrasting the existential dread of facing the old ones with that of being a social outcast. It's a manga, but it's really well written and self-aware enough to take a critical look at the subject).

I tend to not like stuff that gets recommended to me over and over again. It's why I've never read or watched Harry Potter - I don't think it's going to be worth the time.
