I want to KO any pro lifer who says this nonsense.

What do you mean just because I have a roof over my head I automatically have a "good life" when you live a near perfect life and I had a barely functioning roof half my life??

Don't even get me started on the "10 signs you are doing well in life" nonsense too going like
1. You ate today
2. You have clean water
3. You have a roof over your head
4. Bla bla bla
Thats LITERALLY the bare minimum. You could be in prison and still meet that entire list and if you are doing all of that alone, you aren't living, you are surviving. ESPECIALLY if you make minimum wage.

I have a job :)

(I get paid near minimum wage because 99.99% of jobs don't want to pay a livable wage)

To comment seriously, I think a lot of pro lifers confuse living on survival mode as actually living. Functioning at the bare minimum isn't really living, it's surviving, and while there might be some expectation you should be grateful because it could be worse, that's more so just their tactic of attempting to deflect your problems through guilt.

Are you comfortably thriving or are you scarcely surviving. If it's scarcely surviving, then that's not really a great reason to "keep living"

This argument, like many anti-suicide arguments are flawed. People who say this don't understand that there is a hierarchy of needs - you can have your physiological and safety needs met, but still lack love and belonging, esteem, or self-actualization. Just because your needs are met enough to maintain physical homeostasis, doesn't mean we're going to be happy. It's almost stupid how bad this argument is.

Similarly I remember growing up hearing "suicide is the easy way out" and thinking "yeah exactly, I don't want to suffer". Only to later go into healthcare and have a lecture about psychology and mental health and be told that saying "suicide is the easy way out" is actually harmful because it frames suicide as a preferable alternative. Who would've figured lol. Wish this lecture was given to people coming into the healthcare industry 15 or 20 years ago so I wouldn't have had to hear it.

You would be surprised how many anti-choice arguments actually frame suicide as preferable on a deeper level.

The problem with operating off Mallow's hierarchy is that it's designed to be nearly impossible. Self actualization is akin to Buddhahood, and the hierarchy is more a statement that regardless we will always have needs to meet.

Maslow's hierarchy is actually suck at telling people what they need right now. Aside from the self-actualization being absolutely near impossible these days, you can get easier belonging needs right now and still struggling to live. The hierarchy is thrown back when media entertainment up to AI kept people lonely as hell.

I think it's especially annoying because it parallel's another typical statement: 'Things could be worse- you should be grateful for what you have.' I think the main problem with all these statements is- it assumes we are ok with the fact that we were born and are alive. You wouldn't force someone to climb a ladder, witness them fall off and break their leg and then say- be grateful it wasn't your neck. I suppose some people still might though! Even though it was them that forced us up the dodgy ladder to begin with. So- it was effectively their fault.

Plus, I don't think adding a layer of shame/ guilt to things really helps anyone.

I get quite annoyed when people use those phrases on me. 'Other people would love your job, your home, your opportunities, your life.' Well- if it means I can die to make room- they're absolutely welcome to them!

I have good paid work, I don't do much at work because I'm fast and I use AI
I have family and a cat
I have 135+ IQ, I'm smart
I'm not terribly ill, so I'm physically able.

But I am severely depressed. Even if tomorrow I won a billion dollars on lottery, it would not make me happy and I would continue with my suicidal behavior. Depression and addiction resulted in anhedonia. Depression is the silent killer - many multi millionaires like artists, singers etc - committed suicide even though they "had it all" likle that Linkin Park singer or Avicii, and many many others.
