Anyone else enjoy films with a twist in them? I really enjoy psychological thrillers but, any twists are good.

Obvious warning- this thread may well contain spoilers.

Some of my favourite films with clever twists in:

The Machinist, 2004.
Memento, 2000.
Shutter Island, 2010.
Elephant Song, 2014.
The Game, 1997.
Gone Girl, 2014.

Favourite- Oh shit! Moments in films:

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back: 'I am your father'. The Matrix where Morpheus tells Neo he is a battery (effectively.) The Neverending Story when Bastian finds out it is all in fact real and he has become part of that story/ world. I still get weird shivers at that point. Kind of good, creepy vibes. That a book could know you personally were reading it.

Sometimes even film theories can be fascinating. Someone once put forward the twist that all the adventure in Harry Potter was imagined by him as an escape to being an unwanted child leading a difficult life. Interesting idea but imagine reading that at the end of all that story telling! That it was all an illusion. That would be such an anticlimax.

Do you have any favourites? I'm sure there are ones I've forgotten...

The Last Supper 1995

I was shocked when they found out the first poisoning victim was actually a criminal on the run and then at the end when they were the ones who ended up getting poisoned when I have a feeling they decided for once not to poison someone (also the artistic roommate predicted this within on of the paintings he made and I didn't even notice it!)

Cure 1997

The ending, you think they got rid of the cause of these hypnotic killings but nope the MC/Detective gets randomly murdered at the end at a diner out of nowhere and the criminal is in jail so how the hell did that even happen what caused it ?

The Baby of Macon 1993

One of the most visually stunning Peter Greenway films besides The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover. This whole film is a twist because it's a film of a play but also you're confused if the play is actually real events or not within the world of the film/story (also there's an audience within the world of the film ?watching or participating? in this play)

The Holy Mountain 1973

The end when the Alchemist shouts CAMERA

Oh yeah- I forgot The Wicker Man too! I haven't seen the original. I suppose in a way, Midsommar is the new version. I enjoyed that film too. I like pretty disturbing films, come to think of it...

'A Cure for Wellness' 2016 was pretty crazy too.

Plus of course, 'The Shining' 1980. How on earth did I miss that? The ending was amazing.

I've seen all of those except Elephant Song. Pretty good list.

oh yeah you should totally watch the original but it's a bit confusing to know which to watch as there's so many different cuts (the shorter cuts are on Tubi and the Internet archive but if you want the 110 minute cut I recommend Kanopy, free library branch connected streaming service)

I've only watched 'A Cure for Wellness' once but I remember being really impressed/ disturbed. Also, Donnie Darko I only watched once. I found it really sad in places. I have to be feeling in a certain mood to rewatch sad films. I think it may have been the directors cut I bought. Not too sure.

Ha ha- that Shining bear is pretty creepy. So obscure too.

I do love film. I was later really getting in to it compared to a friend but, it's an amazing medium.

'The Good Liar', 2019 was really good. Another pretty disturbing twist there. One of those films where you're not sure who is in control.

A few more obvious ones- 'The Usual Suspects' 1995 and 'Primal Fear' 1996.

An obvious one, but I love The Sixth Sense. It's one of my favourite films. There is such deep loneliness and sadness and compassion in the characters of Cole and Malcolm.

For a more light hearted thriller, Knives Out and Glass Onion are so fun!!

They both are detective/mystery movies where someone gets killed and a group of people related to the victim get together with a detective to figure it out.

Although I enjoyed both the ending plot twist in the first movie was for sure cooler.

Ever heard of 'Clue'? I was obsessed with that film growing up... You might like it if you enjoy black comedy murder mysteries...

I turn off my brain during movies and like to be surprised so most movies with a "twist" get me. The Usual Suspects got me good. The twist in Arrival was pretty good too. I'll cheat and also say The Giver as it was technically a movie but I read the book instead.

I really enjoyed 'Arrival' too. I quite like films that are more cerebral rather than action packed.

but i remember as a child being shocked at the original "willy wonka" movie, the one with gene wilder when he revealed at the end SPOILER

the golden tickets were all a test to find someone to take over his business

Willie Wonka is a really interesting example. I remember watching a YouTube short that said that Gene Wilder was particularly keen to act like a crippled man at the start- before he does that acrobatic move. To kind of set up uncertainty about the character.
