• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

I use Windows on my main computer, but I also run a server with Ubuntu server, another one with TrueNas and a third one with Ubuntu desktop, to top it off I usually use a Chromebook as a light task really portable pc!
Yeah I use an 11inch macbook air with mint, it feels liek a cute machine, closest I'll get to a UMPC and I love it
I have been using Linux for around 4-5 years. Right now I'm using fedora for a year.

The windows was super laggy on my older laptop and i like how i can tweak things with linux.

I initially messed around a lot and broke the system way too often. I don't do much these days and it's stable lol
What type of specs did that laptop have and what winver were you using?
I also gave fedora a go but tbh I didn't enjoy GNOME much and tbh fedora just feels meh to me, I know you can probably use other DEs with it but that distro never resonated with me
I use the Linux Mint 22 on an old laptop. This laptop is about 12 years old so Windows was a little bit slow and Windows 11 doesn't even work with this.

I have tried Damn Small Linux on a computer from 1997. It actually worked.
I forgot that Mint 22 exists now, I stay on 20.3 because 21 and above feels ruined for me, I hate that metacity was fucked off a few years ago
The first distro I used was debian if I don't count trying out Slax, that was when I was a teenager. Currently, I'm using Ubuntu mainly because I have fairly new hardware and with Ubuntu it mostly works (I had to wait for an update for the touchpad to work and I still can't change the brightness of the screen, but that's a detail).
Slax? Haven't heard of that one tbh, I avoid Ubuntu as well since it just feels meh to me, but since it's still very popular I'm sure it isnt that bad of a distro, idk any other reasons people hate on it other than snap
Linux Mint.
I have it on dual boot (with Windows 10 being the other one, unfortunately...) because I was afraid I might need some Windows software for university at some point.
The main reason I switched was some kind of deep paranoia onset in August this year, so... security and privacy I suppose.

Also, Windows sucks.
Has windows updating ever ruined your Mint partition?
I hear alot that windows destroys linux dualboots alot but I've never dualbooted linux with windows for long since I don't like dualbooting much
I love linux and wish it supported gaming more. I love the privacy and customization of linux so much.

Sadly, I am stuck on Windows as I game too much.
I use windows 10 on my main PC mainly do to gaming as well, Linux is great for alot of older and more simple titles though so it goes on some of my laptops
I like Debian.
I dailied Debian for a good amount of time, great OS but their pre-historic update times can get annoying and I hear alot of others complain about that as well

That macbook with mint sounds really cool! Great combination!

I still use it on my home servers, Debian specifically, but not really for desktop usage. Linux is still unbeatable for server use. For desktop usage I use Windows 11 with as much of the nonsense disabled as possible. Windows 11 is hardly perfect and I still miss the glory days of Windows XP, 7, and 2000, but for me personally, desktop Linux still has a ways to go. I tried Mac in the past and it just wasn't my thing.

With that being said when it comes to desktop Linux I like using Ubuntu with XFCE. Distros don't matter all that much, except for maybe Gentoo and Arch. I just use Ubuntu cause it has the most support and is quite stable in my experience. Snaps aren't a problem for me and you can easily remove them.
As for XFCE I like how lightweight and fast it is, it just feels the most robust for me. Cinnamon is quite nice as well.

My first exposure to Linux was sometime back in 2008. I remember the school computer lab had an ancient version of Ubuntu, back when it still used GNOME 2 and it very much intrigued me.

Yes it's so tiny I love it alot, thanks
Huge pcs with 2/3 monitors are great if you need to multitask.

But people tend to forget about the benefits of the small form factor, battery lasts a lot more, they're way easier to carry around and use in a pinch.

It's nice to see someone who also appreciate them!

I used Linux Mint for about a year and I also have a cheap laptop I bought to test Kali Linux on. I returned to Windows because I couldn't install certain things.

I mean i have a pc with 2 monitors too, but i still love my mac, only thing is that its from 2012 so the battery isnt too great and on top of that, linux isnt good with battery life on laptops most of the time as well

Slax, Damn Small Linux, ... You guys bring back memories..

I avoid Ubuntu as well since it just feels meh to me
My main gripe with APT-based distros is that they tend to do too much. You install something, bam, it's running. But I said install, not install and run. Also, they sometimes make way too many modifications to packages. I like to use the software the way it was created, not the way the packager likes it to be. I can totally see how this can appeal to someone else, though. It really is about taste.

Weird, I don't really remember dealing with the auto run thing but I've only dailied 2 apt-based distros (debian and mint)

Maybe it's not the case anymore. But it used to be that if you installed e.g. Apache HTTPD, it would start the service right away.

I get attached to the distro I use, and no matter what can't change.

Last time I switched into my current distro is after I finally decided to ctb but changed my mind the last moment. I was flying back home that I was sb and installed it using hacked airport wifi.

Is the distro left ambiguous on purpose

I've used (in order):
  1. Ubuntu
  2. Archcraft
  3. EndeavorOS
  4. Ubuntu again
  5. Kubuntu
  6. EndeavorOS
I've really enjoyed using EndeavorOS, it might just be baby's first arch based distro, but it hasn't broken on me yet.

EndeavorOS is great because the way I have it set up, it uses way less memory than windows and doesn't force me to interact with bullshit.

I gave EndeavorOS a go before, it was alright, I really liked the aesthetics of it
