  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Here are some of the factors that lead to a suicide being in the news.
Celebrity
Infuential on the internet - Won't typically make tv news but there's often chatter in forums, social media news etc.
High enough in the business world that it effects operations effecting many people
When done in public that it draws attention or interrupts daily routine. A stopped train, fire department closes a busy street due to a jumper, a messy scene in the subway.
Missing person scenario.
Small town - anything is news.

I guess all you can do is make it less likely that there will be news coverage of it. Journalists tend to go for the most sensational suicides. So- quite often young people. In those cases, it's equally because their families are angry and want to express that and lay blame. Plus, public suicides I've seen covered. I'm not so sure they bother so much with older people killing themselves privately.

I guess you could try to express your wishes in a note left behind although, it's really down to others whether they honour that.

I have mixed feelings on it really. I doubt I'll be able to let everyone know and I wouldn't expect my family to. So, I suppose it would be something to find if people happen to notice I've seemingly disappeared. Distant friends have disappeared in my life. It's been odd trying to find out whether they were even still alive. (Probably not but, probably natural death in their case.) I don't think it really bothers me for people to know it was suicide. I don't feel ashamed of wanting to suicide. I think it's a reasonable reaction to being brought into this shit show.

In my experience, only people who are well known or CTB in a newsworthy way (public interest) end up on the news. It happens so often, it's not deemed newsworthy in most places.

i dont think its gonna make an interesting news story or something, whens the last time you heard about someone random who ctb on the news? because i havent

and still once you are dead i dont care what other people think of me or why i have even decided to ctb, i wouldnt be alive to worry about it or even think of that
Recently a man jumped in front of a train locally near me and even though he wouldn't know he was in the news the family were really upset at this constant reminder. So even if you don't care think of the people that will

If the journalist ethics code of conduct is respected, I would not care. But knowing how the media tends to write about suicides--at least in my home country--it could be harmful and triggering to vulnerable others. There's no way I can control this, but I would not like to contribute to the rippling effects of bad journalism practices.
