How much does a 9mm gun in the mouth mess up the appearance of your face?

I'm not worried for myself, but for my next of kin forced to identify my body. Just thinking about the logistics. I plan to leave my ID.

Will my family still need to identify my body? I will be shooting myself away from the home.

If yes, how messed up will my face be? I am worrying about the psychological trauma for them... Could they identify me through other means, such as a birthmark on my leg?

Thank you in advance. I'm in the US, if it helps.

It shouldn't affect your face much, really. Most of the damage is done inside the brain, not on the face

If pointing towards the brain stem, face shouldn't be affected at all.

I saw a video of someone shooting themselves in the mouth with a pistol, there was blood gushing through their nostrils and their face looked torn.

Identification is usually made by other ways. I don't think there should be much facial damage, myself, especially if the gun is held straight in the mouth and slightly upward. Damage should be confined inside the skull and possibly some at the back of the head. Of course, ymmv.

While I never have and never wish to see it myself, I can imagine it does look pretty awful. While the actual bullet it going through the back of the head, the amount of force exerted in a very small space (your mouth) must cause some sort of ricochet effect that can really fuck things up. At the very least I'd imagine your teeth are knocked out and the roof of your mouth is obliterated.

I've seen the aftermath of something similar before. However, this person used a rifle.

Half their head was blown off and the apartment was painted with blood, brain matter, and there were shards of bone too. There was a smell of brain matter and gunpowder. They were still alive and convulsing for a little while, probably because they didn't actually hit the brain stem. Something like that was not compatible with life though and I hope they completely lost consciousness instead of suffering before they died.

I'm guessing that a 9 mm would leave an exit wound but not blow half your head off. However, I obviously can't verify and I don't really want to find out anyways.

9mm, at most it would leave a big hole in the BACK of your head.

I'm pretty confident it would be over quickly with shot to the stem.

I don't know much about guns but there is a video of Budd Dwyer ending his life that way with a revolver and it didn't look as bad as one would think.

It mostly depends on how much force (Speed x Mass) a bullet gives, but esp with point-blank shots the exit gases from a firearm are important too. Though the gasses should just fill the cranium and have minimum effect on the face.

A handgun doesn't have as much power as rifle/shotgun rounds esp 9mm. It's lethal as long as you properly placed the shot and didn't get "help" very fast. Most 9mm rounds I think should lack the power to really fracture/mess-up the skull or have hydro-static shock fucking up the face and eyes.

there was blood gushing through their nostrils and their face looked torn.
The nasal cavity is between the mouth & brain so fluid leakage there is def possible, but should be fixed with just a wipe. Facial damage depends a bit on if the entrance/exit wounds where close to the face allowing the shock-wave of a bullet forcing itself through flesh to effect it. Aiming towards the brain stem or the center of the mouth should really mitigate this.

Preventing facial damage should be down to picking a small caliber and correct firearm positioning (you already got #1 down). I'd also suggest using hollow-point rounds to maximize damage to the brain and reduce the 1% chance your waking up from that to a 0% chance. Another benefit is that it also reduces penetration, meaning it'd have less damage with the exit wound, maybe reducing cosmetic damage, though this is just a theory.

You're fine as long as you know how to position the gun. A proper angle is harder with a long-gun but possible.

When my mom took a bullet to the brainstem the woman at the funeral home did not even realized she'd taken her life with a gun and thought it was an OD since the only sign of trauma was blood around the mouth. As long as you are not using some massive caliber weapon your face is not going to horrifically explode or anything and the exit wound if there is one as would be on the back of your head and not presented to family when they see you to ID you as you'd be laying on your back covering the exit wound.
