Margot and the Nuclear So & So's are classic sad indie ("broadripple is burning" would be the first song to come to mind.
Not necessarily always "sad" but I've been really into Big Thief (or older Adrienne Lenker) these days. And Remember Sports.

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm a newbie to sad indie songs so I haven't heard of Margot before. Will definitely check all their songs out. Listening to Broadripple Is Burning right now and really enjoy it, adding it to the playlist
