So today my manager said an odd thing.

He said if I ever wanted to leave the company and get a job elsewhere he could arrange it for me to be made redundant and be paid off.

It triggered my anxiety, is he just being kind, offering to get me a payout if I fancy changing jobs or is he trying to hint I should think about leaving?

I know I am seen as a "problem child" by some teams as I like things done properly and that I have stopped some teams cutting corners. However I also know I am a skilled engineer and my team are good at getting things done.

I always read too much into everything so I just don't know?

Your anxiety is valid but I don't think that he was hinting at you to leave. I'm pretty sure he would have been direct with you if there were any issues, I mean he is a manager, what's stopping him? I don't know what kind of engineering company you work in but maybe he sees your potential and he tried to suggest that you could do even better? I know this might be stupid but that's honestly how I've read it the first time I read your post. In any case, I think that the kindness scenario is more likely than him trying to get you to leave. I completely understand the anxiety though, that would have caught me off-guard too.
