My laptop has had problems ever since it took some water damage and blunt force trauma a year back. I've taken it to a repair store, they said that it would be "good as new" after me giving them a bunch of money. The supposed "repair" didn't fix anything, the problems (computer shutting down randomly and what I'm assuming is the fan is making weird noises, sound like it's very damaged) continued until I bought a laptop cooler several months ago. It removed all of the problems except for the noise, but I'm able to block out the noise with music (lol). Anyway, now it started to shut down randomly again, it's very annoying.

Any IT people know if there's something I can do besides paying idiots to smack the harddrive with their dicks and claim that it's "as good as new"?

He says try a hard drive test and a memory test.

Too risky, it still works well aside from shutting down sometimes. I'm confident that the fans and some other shit in there are damaged. They shouldn't have any more dmg than when I turned it in for """""repairs""""", though.
I think it's a hardware problem, fml. Gonna have to either waste money on another so called "repair" or buy a new computer :(

www.reddit.com/r/laptopdeals is a great site to look for deals

Laptops shutting down frequently could be a sign of poor power management, the power dongle is broken or the battery isn't keeping a charge. Another thing is overheating, make sure the fans are spinning and not blocked. You could try getting another battery pack.

Another thought - how dusty is it where you have it? Dust inevitably accumulates inside and can cause issues, which would be another good reason to open it up and have a look, give it a clean. Not quite sure why you think it's a risky thing to do, given your other options are limited.

I'm going to give it a run with a vacuum cleaner or something. I'd rather not open it up, don't think I have the right screwdriver either lol, I think you can mess up shit really easily if you don't know what you're doing. One of the fans are not running, one is severely obstructed.

I just opened and did my best at cleaning with compressed air, seems to have had no effect but I won't know it didn't work until the computer shuts down again. Guessing I'll have to either take my chances with the repair guys or buy another laptop :(

Did you try the tests? You just need some software for it.

Yeah, it's not software. One of the fans are not working, the other is damaged. Some other shit could have melted as a result, idk. I'm assoooming that the computer overheats and shuts down for damage control. Going to have to turn it in to a repair shop if it shuts down again, this time I'll be very clear about what the problem is and demand a refund if they don't manage to fix it.

Can't repair it yourself? At least then you know you won't be ripped off

No, I would have to buy new fans and also clean the fan-area (I bought compressed air but the clerk fucked up and I did not get the small tube). This will most likely take longer and might be more expensive than turning it in. I'm also not made entirely of energy, well I guess in some sense I am, but still.

The computer hasn't shut down again yet, I might get lucky and not have to do anything more.

Use HWInfo to check the temps. If you are in the 80°C+ range on CPU, GPU, or both, you are throttling and/or overheating. https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

If overheating, you need to open up the laptop. This screwdriver set will have every bit you need:
1614346178183

Then you will need to remove the cpu / gpu heat sync will look something like this:
1614345374228

After removal, you need to remove the old thermal paste. To to do, you need q tips and isopropyl alcohol. Remove the old paste from the cpu, gpu, and heat sync.

Replace the old paste with a new, higher quality paste like this:
1614346092785

This paste is non-conductive. That is important, especially in laptops. Use about this amount. Doesn't matter if you spread it, as the pressure of the heat sync will spread it out.
1614345638304

Replace the heat sync. If the fans are making noise, don't plug them back in. You may need a laptop cooler to compensate for the broken fans:
1614346049374

Start the laptop and monitor the idle temps with HWInfo. They should be substantially cooler. To really test the laptop you can use AIDA64 for the cpu: https://www.aida64.com/downloads and heaven benchmark for the gpu (if applicable) https://benchmark.unigine.com/heaven

Hope this helps. Anyone with questions, reply or pm/message me.

Thanks man. My GPU is hanging out around 60 degrees C and my GPU is "idle", few second per hour it stops being idle and is only around 40C at that point.

So I opened everything up and sprayed compressed gas (didn't have the skinny tube, tho) into the fans and around the entire electronics board thingy. I already have a cooling pad, without it the computer would overheat. It sounds like replacing the thermal paste myself and possibly replacing the fans (possible?) would cost around the same amount of money as letting """"professionals"""" do it.

Update: the laptop has not shut down since me """"cleaning"""" it. The GPU is almost never active and the CPU is mostly hanging out at around 60C, sometimes reaching 80C but so far no shutdowns. I expect it to start having problems again soon or very soon, I will then either DIY fix it (first time doing anything of the sort) or handing it in to a shop with detailed instructions of what needs to be done.

Imagine the mental state of someone choosing to come to a suicide forum with this conundrum...

It sounds for me that the fan bearing is probably grinding against something.
I would recommend taking it apart and purchasing one of those " Wheel Bearing Grease" from ebay or some other platorm. Make sure it's not one of those liquid ones since they are used for different purposes.
If you would live in my country, I would help you, even if you wouldn't have the money to afford the costs of the greese and the hours I "waste" with your device.

Btw. for best results use thermal grizzly kryonaut if it's a gaming laptop and arctic mx4 (2019) if it's an office machine

I don't really care about earning money with those type of stuff.
I'm just doing that as an hobby. The same goes for cars. I'm more of an PC guy than a car guy but somehow I managed to learn how to repair a car with flooded engine and now my aunt is driving an Daihatsu Terios instead driving her Fiat Panda which had a lot of holes in the floor.

Don't want to be rude but I think you should ask this question on tech support forum. There are much more electronics and IT specialists there. I can recommend this site : https://www.elektroda.com/. This site helped me thousands of time. Most people there are polish but they have no trouble with speaking in English. Assuming that 99% of this site users are Polish they will be delighted to help a foreigner!

Right when I stopped having shutdowns and my cpu temp is hanging out at 40C. I re-routed the power, reducing the amount of electricity going to the fans, since the cooling pad is doing all of the work. I guess the fans were producing more heat than they were getting rid of. Maybe the problems jumped from my computer to yours.
