Death and suicide are prevalent in this anime, and it causes a kind of existential dread for a lot of people. It came out just before digital animation in japan took off so it has this depressing dark style that just wouldn't be possible if it came out 6 to 10 years later.

the game is even darker than the anime in this regard and ends with a scene featuring
lain pulling a gun out of a concealed paper bag and killing herself on a crowded highway while the surrounding atmosphere continues as normal, cars whirring past, rain pouring as the camera slowly fades to black
