My only objection is how the idea is presented. I envision a Trump rant about bombing the shit out of the cartels.
It wouldn't be a simple matter to fight the cartels. I'd expect them to hide, embed with civilians, and retreat to neighboring countries. Cartels are loose networks, and not something you can win against, in a traditional military sense.
It's not an entirely bad idea to offer military assistance to Mexico, though. Surveillance drones, occasional drone strikes, sonar equipment for the subs, and armored personnel carriers, could be situationally helpful.
Surface level research also show that this is being done by the CIA since 2008. I guess it's not strictly military, but I assume the same level of sophisticated assets.
