You can never be sure. There were a few members here whose deaths were reported in the newspaper. That's how you know that someone died for real. Unless that happens you never really know for sure. Some comeback with new accounts because they're too ashamed to admit failure.

Of course people do that, and tbh I've seen a fair few goodbye threads turn out to be false, unless it's confirmed externally to this site there is never any way of knowing for sure.

One was part of an elaborate N scam, for a start. As posted above by throwaway123, some users have returned under different accounts because they feel embarrassed or frankly enjoyed the drama, they'll admit this to one person and the gossip spreads. This has happened in one case I'm aware of. I really don't think goodbye threads, in themselves, can ever be taken as evidence of anyone successfully passing.

Threads a few weeks ago asked me, out of the blue, if I was on Discord.
I told that I wasn't, but they didn't follow up with any explanation.
I thought they were doing mod's stuff.
Maybe they were looking for other aliases/fake personas.
It's really sad knowing that we aren't safe from such behaviors even here.
