  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Do you agree that it's better if they showed the newest comments on the first page?

I've been looking at posts on here, and whenever I look at the comments it goes from old to new. So that means I'd have to go to the next page of the comment section to see the newest comments. It just feels odd that they built the website like this, most forums have the newest comments on the first page and the oldest comments on the next page.

I hope you understood what I mean.

I like it the way it is honestly. Makes more sense as a progression of conversation and story. Feels more natural to me.

I guess I haven't been on that many forums then lol, Idk I just like to see the newest comments the first time I click on a post instead of having to go to the last page and scroll all the way down.

I would say it best to have it go to the front page first as to show the staring post of the thread and chronological order of the conversation. The only exception where I would want to go to the most recent page is with megathreads but you can just click on the numbered buttons to do that:

nah. it makes more sense to show oldest to newest. Its kind of like a conversation and also allows everyone to at least have a chance of being involved rather than relying on being first as much i think

That would just make it harder to read through people's conversations. There is a reason why most forums generally tend to order comments from oldest to newest and not the other way around. It just flows better.

I think it's probably because forums are generally meant to be informative. If you're looking for resources or an answer to a question, and that question gets answered perfectly by the second comment but some sort of discussion continues after that, it makes no sense to have somebody looking backwards through a conversation to find what they need. It also ideally reduces people from reiterating what has already been because hopefully they have read through some of the other conversation.

But it can take some getting used to for sure.

Working through sequentially from the original query or comment is more straightforward for me so that I get the information flow in order.

I have never in my life read a forum that has shown new comments before the old.

I think it's good as it is. But you know what I would absolutely love? A way to show the user if they had previously or responded to a certain thread. With so many old ones that come back to life even if they're just a few months old, I always forget.

Not exactly what you want but you can jump to the newest comments by clicking this button. I don't know how the forum determines which posts are new though.

I really like it this way. It's like the old forums I used to visit. It feels comfy and I feel like I'm in control.

Nowadays, most websites are made to be addictive and to show me whatever the algorithm thinks I should see. Things like Youtube, Reddit, social networks... Here, however, the order to show you threads and comments is logical and transparent, I can easily search for specific content, and there's no infinite scroll. It's made to be good for the user, not good for the owner. I wish all the internet was a bit like this.

For me a little picture of my avatar is seen next to the original poster's profile picture on threads that I have already posted, whether on pc or phone:

this is just how xenforo default comment sorting works, which is the software most webforums use. i like it a lot, personally.
