I came across this yesterday and posted it in reply to someone's question about where to shoot. I thought I would share it with a wider audience.
This guy shot himself through the temple, lived, and is now completely blind. It sounds like he would have ultimately died had he not been rescued. This is why it is important to make sure you know what you're doing before you do it especially with a firearm. You presumably get one chance to get it right. The consequences of failure can be devastating as in this kid's case. I can't even imagine the depths of hell he's in now. If he doesn't attempt to CTB at some point, the rest of his life will be like this.
I've been trying to CTB by firearm for several months now and SI has been kicking like a mule. It's in part because of stories like this. I know statistically speaking the odds of survival of a SIGSW are slim, but boy would I hate to be part of the minority.
One last thing. I find it ironic that the caption under his photo says that he got a second chance at life.

I've seen many failed ones. One guy was moaning and groaning in his car without his face. Other guy had a steaming hole as his jaw. It's genuinely horrendous

I would love to know where on his temple he aimed. Media always shows people aiming above the ear. In reality, you should aim behind your ear.

Most gun failures come from poor aim. People do not research where they need to shoot and think that anywhere in the head counts.

yeah probably wrong aim, and most likely a small flinch, probably towards the front of the face.
the aim and the power [caliber, gun type] are the two most important things.
Aim for brainstem - behind the ear sounds good, but from my research it looks like into the mouth with about 30degree angle upwards is the best bet.

Sounds like he aimed up under his chin which is about the worst place you can shoot yourself from.

That is just so horrific, it's horrific to me how there is no limit as to how much one can suffer in this torturous, cruel existence, I find it terrifying how trying to die can go wrong and lead to way worse torture and suffering, I see so much cruelty in how I cannot just have a death like falling into an eternal sleep to finally escape from this existence I always saw as the most terrible tragic mistake in the first place, all I hope for is some peace.

The emotional costs of failure are known. This is the other terrible cost.
Research is possibly the most important part of the process. From it you learn what supplies are needed and how to properly use them.
I hope the best for this poor guy. All he did was trade one HELL for another.
